marlin conversion by Dave Clements

Post by foxtrapper »

Dave Clements is offering a new caliber conversion for the Marlin 1895 that requires only a barrel change. Its a .348 calibre necked down 45/70 shortened to 2.0. The dies will be offered by Dave. Also the round will not be required fire formed.

Keep in mind that the old, obsolete .33 Winchester (.33WCF), which was also based on the .45-70 case, was loaded by the factory with a 200 grain soft point bullet at a MV of 2200 fps and ME of 2150 ft. lbs.

It's on his message board, topic titled "Attention!! New Marlin Conversion"

Is the Marlin too narrow to handle the 348 wcf case? Too short?

Interesting choice and maybe it will help preserve, if not boost 348 bullet selection. I can't help wonder why he didn't go with .358 instead.

Yes, the Marlin is too short to handle the 2.8" 348.

I don't think there are any more "good" 358 flat point bullets than 348s.

Perhaps if you only look at jacketed bullets, but if you include cast bullets, make mine a 35! There are very few .348 molds floating around.

$625 + dies is not all that bad.
With those ballistics it should work on most everything I'd ever hunt, and be a good campfire conversation starter.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.
