OT: A plug for the old-fashioned consignment sale.

Post by cshold »

Came home from work today to find a nice little surprise
In the mail. A check from one of my locally favored gun
Dealer/builder’s.

After the 20% commission I still came away with over
$200.00 more than I paid for it. :D

Good for you!

Isn't 20% a bit steep though?

I'm glad the sale worked for you. The last consignment I tried was about 12 years ago. I took an 870 SP to a dealer about 40 miles from my place. One of the bigger dealers in my area. It didn't sell after a few months so I went to take it back. By law, the dealer had to do the instant background check. It was the one time in at least 50 gun purchases that I had trouble. They couldn't let me bring it home. I had to drive back the next weekend to retieve it. Now I list them online to a nation wide audience.

Not this time, the 20% was more than worth it.
I tried to sell this gun on my own a couple of times,
Including this forum at a loss with no luck,
not even an offer.

Yep, congrats - I think. Looks like a nice weapon - why'd you let it go?

The rifle had become a dust collector.
I didn’t think it deserved this fate.
I am hoping someone else has the excitement, zeal and fun
as I did with this rifle years ago.

I have become a firm believer of late in two things.
1. We truly don't own anything during our short stay on this planet.
2. And if an item that you have only ever gets moved just to clean around a couple of times a year, it’s time to let it go. IMHO

20% is about "rock bottom" in the consignment world now. Some charge 50%. You might as well sell it to a dealer as do that and they STILL get business! We do consignments at the shop for 20% but have to pay the 5% state sales tax out of that. We ARE rock bottom.
Sincerely,

Hobie
