New acquisiton -- Winchester 1895 takedown in 30 Govt 06

Post by Noah Zark »

Image

It's been refinished (reblued) and custom stocked in birdseye maple but I wanted a nice shooter in 30-06, not a collector gun. This was a "grail" item of sorts, a levergun niche in the collection that was unfilled for some time. I've passed on lots of other 1895s in 30-06 because of condition and gawdawful "Winchester collector" pricing. Seeing that this one was refinished and restocked (very professionally, you should see the fit of the wood to metal), and the bore of the "smokeless powder" barrel is MINT I got it yesterday at a small firehall show at a fraction of the cost of a collector piece.

You done GOOD, Noah. I like shooters, not collectors, too. :)

Nice.
Need a range report.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

Welcome. Nice first post! Maple is a beautifully grained wood to me. Don't see it much on modern rifles. A ton of muzzle stuffers were stocked in it though.

Noah,

Welcome to the forum.

That 95 is very striking and attractive. I have to say I've never seen a lever gun stocked like that.

But ..... and this is the important part, how does it shoot? We are looking forward to a range report.

RANGE REPORT:

I fired 16 rds of Greek surplus 30-06 M2 ball through the 1895 this afternoon, and was able to knock over empty yellow Pennzoil bottles at 100 yds pretty much on command.

Thanks for all the comments!

Nope, don't hunt anymore. Not for 25 years, got shot at the last season I hunted. This despite an orange coat and hat, WTF, over?

Thanks for the "welcome back," too. It took me too long to re-register at the Refuge.

Nice - and a gennie, too !

BTW - didjaknow - If'n the "yellow" color of Maple puts one "off", that any Maple stock can be either stained or "Suigi" finished - to give it a dark honey look that really accentuates the grain, whether it's curley, birds-eye, or fiddleback ?

I did so, to a Bishop Maple re-stocked, sporterized Springfield I picked up for a song because it looked horrible. A little restyling with a rasp, some stain & Tru-oil, and voila ! - double my money back. ;)

Welcome aboard and a very nice rifle. If I find a takedown in .405 at a reasonable $$, I will be on it like a duck on a June bug.

Did you shoot back?

Hope you are okay after that. That is why I never hunted in Michigan when I lived there. I didn't have any private land to hunt on, and there were too many idiots from Detroit who flocked up north to hunt each fall. They touched a gun once a year, and by gum, they were going to shoot their box of ammo regardless of whether they saw any deer. My friend lost his nephew the year before I left. The boy - 16 - was sitting in his father's pick-up truck on a two-track, and some fool down the road blasted at bambi as it bounced by. Shot the kid where he sat...

Welcome to the forum. NICE rifle! I too was shot at one year while hunting. Even after standing up and waving orange beanie! PM sent. All I'll say her is: Don't mess with a combat vet.

I dropped and rolled on my back, and emptied the gun into the air. I could hear the dolt running away, crashing through the brush and stirring up the forest floor. I lay there for a bit and promised myself, "Never again will I buy a license . . . "

Actually, I believe the words that went through my head were "F__k this s__t . . . "

Now I shoot only at paper, claybirds, and non-breakable plastic containers.

Thanks again to all for your comments on the 1895!

Beautiful rifle!

Make certain to clean up the bore. I've heard rumors that Greek surplus ammo is corrosive.

Welcome to our little hole-in-the-wall nook. 8) You have a beautiful rifle.

I don't hunt the elk rifle seasons, only the elk ML seasons. I wasn't shot at, but was "scoped" by an idiot. Had the orange on, waved arms & shouted & the moron kept on doing it. We almost caught the miserable wretch, but he made his truck & skedaddled.

No sense in having them if you can't shoot it.
