Lever gun elk hunt

Post by crs »

:lol: Finally, I drew an elk hunt at Whittington Center in New Mexico! I have 5 daya in early January to get within .45-90 range of a cow elk.
So excited about this that I amy even load up something special for the hunt.

What bullet are you planning to use on those elk?

Will do.
Right now the bullet is undecided, but I am looking into it.
Also, I am recruiting a non hunting accomplice. I am giving the wife and kids the right of firt refusal and as needed, will then broaden my search.

Sweet.
Here in Michigan they hand out 250 tags with 75,000 people putting in for them. :cry:

You might consider the Hornady 350 RN over 60 grains of IMR 3031. I like the 300 Barnes Original and 64/3031. I don't know about the throats on the Miroku .45-90s, so maybe they won't accept a 350 FN. That's why I mentioned the RN. :)

Charles:

If you want the best guide youv'e ever had you need to send me the dates. However, the deal is you cannot shoot more than 2 rounds at an elk. I am still traumatized from our last hunt together! Those poor bullets, almost a whole box of them - and those innocent mesquite bushes we killed! Just kidding - but if you do need a partner let me know and I'll get out there.

CONGRATS, I am glad that you have a chance to go on such a great hunt. Unfortunatly I did not draw any tags this year; I will have to surfice for an over the counter tag for the local areas.
A perfect day can only be achieved while hunting

You might look at Hawk's selection of bullets. They are premium bullets but offer several different jacket thicknesses. I do know that in my 405 Win, the .025 jacket expanded on shoulder shot whitetail, but the .035 jacket didn't seem to. When I lived on the WY/ID border I carried the .035 bullet in my rifle, but alas didn't get the chance to use it on anything more than porcupine and grouse :D . BTW...I believe that you will need to specify the cannelure location when ordering, or put it on yourself if you have a tool to do so.

86er;
Ouch - and I was trying to forget those missed shots !
I did get my antelope with the first shot at over 100 yards, so maybe those exotics were just too close?

Joe;
OK all the family folks told me to go get a big strong, young, hunter to help pack out the meat and you are at the top of the list!
Tomorrow, I will call NRA Whittington Center to confirm lodging, how to get game out of back country, local meat processing plants, expected temperatures, food, etc.
The dates of the event are:
1. Briefing at the center on Friday January 4 and they go show the hunters where they will be hunting.
2. The hunt begins Saturday, Jan 5 and runs through Wed Jan 9.
3. I will have to drive up from Dallas on Thursday Jan 4 (just after my hangover subsides).

If you really want to go, I will make you a deal - if I do miss two shots at an elk, you can take the next two for me. Of course, you will have to learn to shoot an 1886 without a scope!
BTW - My two first shots at game with my IRON SIGHTED 1886, resulted in two dead whitetail spikes; one at 80 yards and another at 100 yards.
