iPhone gps app for curvy driving ?

Post by Tycer »

For those of you that like to ride or drive spirited, what iPhone map app gives you the best view of upcoming curves?
Kind regards,
Tycer

Can't imagine driving on curvy roads in a spirited manner and keeping an eye on anything but the road?

We’re going back to US129 and there’s so many curves I forget where I am and which curve is next.

Back in my younger years when I still rode motorcycles (Honda Hawk GT NT650LK) in the SF Bay Area, I got in the habit of riding Highway 9 over to Santa Cruz where I'd have lunch before going to work swing shift. Don't know how many turns on that route, but it was a twisty son of a gun! 8)

looks like a great run. my garmin will post up a notification that's more distracting than useful. I do use the road itself on the gps to see the turns coming up, but only when I have the gps mounted so it's in my scan like a hud. in new truck I the gps is out of my scan and i have to be careful. I hope I get to cruse that one some day. I

Looks like Waze is it. Punch in the destination and the purple line is on a map with no distractions because it’s in the boonies.

Drove the Tail of the Dragon once. Drove the wife's Highlander. Would have been better in my old Turbo Coupe. Once I got out from behind the people doing 20 mph it was much more fun!!! Hope I get to take my Harley down it some day, while I can still ride.

Sounds like it's best to just slow down and watch the road ahead. Unless you take a navigator whose really good at calling out turns and how tight they will be.

I have used Google maps to keep track of country roads in heavy fog. The fog was so thick it was the only way I could keep from driving past my turn off.

Last time I went it was a Wednesday not during leaf season… This time going slow shouldn’t be a problem. There’s more than 350 registered for the event. I think it’s going to look like this:

I was at a car show this Saturday, held at the Maryhill Museum in Washington. About 100 miles from home for me, but a beautiful setting in the park. At registration they had a schedule of events, and it said at 12:00 noon the hill climb course for the Maryhill Hill Climb would be open for any car show attendees who wanted to run the course.
My old '39 Chev is certainly no corner carver, as it's setup like a 60's drag car. But how many chances would I ever get to drive the 2 mile closed course up Maryhill? It's 26 tight turns, and almost 1000 ft. of elevation change from start to finish. All on paved road, but no corner markings to indicate how tight the corners are! And miss a corner, and it could be anything from a 200ft. drop, to a 600ft. drop!
So at noon I left the show, and made the 4 mile drive up the road to the hill climb course. Stopped at the bottom to hit the switch on my electric cutouts, and headed up the course. We were told to stay on the uphill side of the road as other cars might be coming down! Unlike the next day when the course is closed for the races, and cars can use up both lanes to make faster runs.
I started my cell phone stop watch at the bottom, and it clicked off 3 minutes when I got to the top. Not earth shattering, but considering race cars do it in about 2.5 minutes in the lower classes, my big heavy '39 did pretty well and stayed on my side of the road.
When I hit the top there's a staging landing, and there was a couple dozen sports cars sitting there. They can watch cars go up the hill climb for most of the course from this point, and people told me they were all smiles seeing an old '39 Chevy running the course with open headers on a V8. I think other than one old Corvette, I was the only American car at the top. It was a real hoot, and I enjoyed it more than almost anything I've ever done!

What a treat for you, and for the drivers at the top. Kudos and thanks for posting your beautiful car.

Thanks guys! Almost made me wish I'd done my '39 build as an old school corner carving racer, instead of a 60's drag style build.
