Prayers up for those in the path of Hurricane Ian

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Mrs. YK and I were just in the Sarasota area this past weekend for a business conference. Hard to reconcile the beautiful weekend we had with the images we are seeing tonight. Prayers up for sure for all those in the path of this terrible storm. They are saying it may hit SC late Friday (probably no longer as a hurricane, but still a tropical storm). We'll be getting ready soon.

I have a cousin in Hudson, landfall just south. Being very wise Californians they leave town when hurricanes are inbound. They are hoping for no damage but won’t know until they go back.

.
When a storm is a "500 year event" it definitely can be difficult to know how to prepare. Hundred-year flood levels are fairly well documented most places in the US, but 500 year levels are just a guess. When land is costly you know people will push the boundaries.

Hopefully there won't be too many lives lost.

Amazing what "just a few feet" of water can destroy.

I'm in central Florida between Whorelando and Tampa. We lost power at 17:03 on Wed. Evening and just got it back on at 23:20 Sat night. We ran a generator for periods of time to keep food in the freezer and fridge cold. We also lined up ice chests and a wheel barrow along the drip line of the roof to catch run off, this was used to flush toilets. The wife was looking out the front window when we lost the first large oak ( about 30" in diameter), we lost a total of 6 large trees. None of them fell on anything of any value except other trees.
The Gov. held a press confrence the other day where he gave a sitrep of what had happened. It seems the entire electrical grid in Lee and Collier county was totally destroyed and would have to be rebuilt from the ground up.
I haven't had TV for several days but I have seen online where I-75 near Port Charlotte was under water for a 1/2 a mile or so and shut down.

Yeah, we got wacked with a big one. Tons of rain hear and wicked wind.
They always seem to hit at night, just to scare the stuff out of you!
All the creeks were way out of their banks. Water was right up against the house.
Rain stopped just in time for us. The creek to the north of us was way worse and in the houses.
Yard is a disaster, but I cleaned up the big stuff, except for the widow makers.
Tons of work left to do. Everybody in our neighborhood is fine.

Good to hear.

I was getting updates from my aunt and uncle in Omand Beach. Lots of water, but their neighborhood was fine. We were trying to get them go north for a few days, but wouldn't have it. My dad waits until after hurricane season before he heads south for the winter, which make me happy.

Just got another update. All is good, except part of the front porch is now part of the back porch. I think he realized about halfway through storm that they should have left for a few days.

My dad's place is in Vero beach. According to his neighbors, all is good in their part of FL.

Watch out for those falling iguanas, they're probably tired of the storm too. :D

Wife’s aunt and uncle have a house on Sanibel Island which if a barrier island to Ft Myers. Eight mile causeway is wiped out. It was hit by peak winds along the eye wall of estimated up to 155 mph. They have a house one back from the western beach. A section of roof maybe 45 feet long was taken off a beach house and thrown into the top story of theirs. The houses appear to be about 300 ft apart.

When I was a kid there was no Sanibel causeway, if you wanted to get onto the island you had to take the ferry from Punta Rassa to the Island. I wonder if they'll go back to that concept for the short term.

I doubt they have any choice but getting the clean up crews and equipment there will likely require a roadway. Ft Myers list a 1,000 ft pier looks to be just gone.
