Range Trip

Post by Drawdown »

Headed out on this beautiful day to try the new Mod 94. I stand corrected concerning carbines, this rifle has already won my heart.

It shot 4 different loads, 150 gr, 160gr, and 170gr all to the same POI! First target in the upper left then clockwise, 1st was Federal factory 150gr, then my reloads, Sierra 150gr, Hawk 170gr, and last Hornady 160gr. I was glad to see the Hawks shot best, 170gr @ aprox 2190fps, but it shot the Hornady 160FTX just as well, I'm sure the one low shot was my fault. I made one click up in sight adjustment on the 2nd target, after the first shot.
I've shot too many rounds through my Marlin, and know it's no where near this consistent, 4 different loads, mag filled with 5rds, then empty it, and barrel heat didn't seem to matter.

I'll try it next time at 60yds and 100yds, but what I'm seeing so far this rifle may very well even beat out my Mod 64? At barely 6lb and knowing most all my hunting will be by 4w, what's not to love about it? Another range trip or two will prove it?

It's a 9 mile 4w ride to this shooting range, less than 2 as crow flies. Took these on way back. The peak on left is Big Black Mt, the highest point in Ky. I'm about 2/3 way back down where I'm at

Nice time! I did a few motorcycle trips thru back roads of KY. Found some nice shops to stop at. Really wanted to do some shooting and camping but weather was getting bad. 30/30 is the last rifle and cartridge I'll part with. Thanks for pics and report.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Pretty hard to beat a 94 carbine in 30-30.
Probably why they've made a few of em over the years. :D

Glad she's a good shooter. A good looker too in daylight. I can smell the steaks already.

Looks pretty consistent to start. Mine shoots the best with Federal 170s. Have around 600 through it since 1990. Nice that you are so pleased with it.

The 4w trip, being in mountains, is a big part of why I shoot-reload so much. The view, seclusion, I do love em! I bought the rifle mostly because it was in such good shape, and dreaming of seeing my granddaughter use it! Now, it may very well be, a well 😀 used rifle by time she gets it? Hopefully a few deer notches in it??
I weighed it again and it's slightly less than 6.5lbs.

Very nice! Makes me want to get up to my cabin in PA even more.
Here's a lousy picture of my 94. The glare from the window makes it look like the receiver is worn, but the finish is in excellent shape.
Need to shoot it more often.

All that part of the state is beautiful, and lots of good hunting from what I know about it!

Nice rifle and as others have said, beautiful country.

I had a hunting pal just after college who would occasionally poke fun at the old 32 Special 94 carbine I was toting at the time as he was fond of bolt guns and sizzling cartridges. One day he forgot his ammo and I lent him the 94 to carry as we worked an old overgrown woodlot. I just carried my Model 58 Smith. He ended up taking a nice buck and totally fell in love with the 94, tried to buy mine on the spot. Think it took him all of 3 weeks to find a nice 30-30.
