Thinning out the dogs

Post by TedH »

My lovely wife was apparently tired of listening to me hint about wanting a night vision optic to help me reduce the very heavy coyote population we have, and got me a Sightmark Wraith for my birthday in February.
Mounted on a 5.56 cal AR15, I found that it makes a formidable opponent for the local song dogs. I had success during the breeding season using a lone female howl on my FoxPro electronic call. It's an interesting twist on hunting for me. The Wraith will record HD video as well as take still shots. For a unit that can be had for under $500, I recommend trying it out for a little night time fun.

Good report. Thanks!

I've watched videos of these being used on the you tubes, but this is better.

That looks like a pretty sweet setup.
Do the hides bring anything? We used to hunt coyotes back in my youth. I can remember getting up to $25 for a nice one.

That is a big yote, all right. Down here in the desert they aren’t much larger than foxes.

Hides aren't worth much these days. You might get 10 bucks for one like this. Since this one was a big boy and had a beautiful coat, I took him to my taxidermist for a full body mount.

Very nice glad it works for you ! I’ve tried several that belong to friends . The night vision ones I had difficulty seeing with them , and more than likely I wasn’t doing something correctly . But thermal optics seem to be the ticket for me .

Good to see still at 'm Ted.
Those Wraiths are highly rated.
I have resisted nv until now and got a small add on.
It has accounted for several already but has a funny name. Sytong 66 12mm.
I chose it for its tiny size and simplicity and layout.

Hi TedH, looks like way too much fun. I think I may need to try one.
What kind of batteries does the scope and IR Illuminator use?
Is this the one that will hookup to your phone via Bluetooth to record video?

The scope takes 4 AA batteries. Regular alkaline batteries will only run it for a couple hours. The Energizer Lithium batteries are good for about 6 hours of constant use. There is also a port to allow you to plug in an external battery pack. Then the sky is the limit.

The IR light takes a CR123. I also use the lithium battery there and it runs a good while.

It records to a micro SD card that goes in the scope. You can record video, take still photos, and play back in the scope. I'll then take the micro SD card out and put it in the SD adapter and pop it in my laptop to upload the video. If I can figure out how to link a video, I'll post a daytime video of an Axis doe I shot in Texas with the scope mounted on my 6.5 Grendel. Really good quality video.
