Winchester 64A

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

Can any of you Winchester experts tell me when a Winchester 64A with serial number 37938XX was made?

Scott,

Please recheck you serial #. The main winchester site I use for serial # searches - stated 'Not found'.

I found this statement on a dedicated 64 site - 'The Cody Firearms Museum research office has the Polishing Room serialization records for all Model 64s manufactured through serial number 1352066'. AND THIS 'Production of the Model 64 began in late 1932, and two variants were offered; (1) the standard Rifle, and (2) the Deer Rifle. Many collectors refer to the Deer Rifle as a “Deluxe”. Throughout its entire production, the Model 64 was serialized in the Model 94 serial number range. Production of the Model 64 ended in late 1957, with an estimated at 66,783 manufactured, but that estimate may be too low.'

If the the first and second statements are correct about serial # running in with the 1894's and I know that the 1894 serial #'s of 3.7 million fall in the 1972 to 1974 timeframe. Therefore, I think something is off.

Can you also provide the full serial #? I know it is customary to do that but it would help in the search websites. OR go here and do it yourself. https://winchestercollector.org/dates/

This is a link to Leverguns in '08 about the 64 A. Griff said they were made in 72&73. :D https://levergunscommunity.org/viewtopic.php?t=4411

Yes. My guess by the looks and the number is the re-issue in 72 or so. I don't thing they made a whole lot of them in this second run. Meant to post earlier and got sidetracked.

1972. Mine is 3794XXX and is a 1st year. I won one in a Navy raffle in 1973, it was stolen in 1974 and I purchased the aforementioned one from Victor on this site in 2007. NIB, w/tags, etc., on its 2nd owner now... me!

I called Winchester about my original when I got back to the States and they told me, they had a LOT of barrels left from the NRA Centennial and used them in the 64A. (As I recall)!

The 64 and the 71 just feel so much better in my hands. They point so well and have very comfortable stocks.

I always wanted a Winchester with a pistol grip stock like the Marlins have.
Meanwhile all my Marlins are straight stock like a common Winchester 94!
Go figure! :P

I like the 64. Very pretty, well balanced, and my grandfather carried one while a warden in the Allagash.
But I do not like the pistol grips. I find, for me, they don't point as well as the straight grips.
These are my 64s. Two standards in 30-30 and 32WS. A short rifle in 30-30. And an early 94 rifle that was factory fitted with a 64 front end in 32WS and had a 56 Lyman installed. Of all of them, it is the only one I use, and an incredible shooter.

Beautiful! Especially that short rifle.

I’ll keep my 94 SRC for the saddle and if I ever have to chase bad guys again. But for sitting on a stump in the woods, I really like the 64.

Thank you Scott. It was a lucky find in about 2003.
That is a pretty good way of thinking of it.
When everything is taken into consideration, a 94 carbine is an incredible weapon. As handy and lively as a 92 carbine is, it lacks the power and range of the 94. And for very little weight savings.
While on the subject, I have to confess.....
As much as I love the carbine butt on a nice saddle carbine, the later Townsend Whelen design shotgun butt shoulders faster and smoother.
There.... I said it....

I agree with OldWin on the shotgun butt! Feels more comfortable on my shoulder.
The cool factor is with the old style saddle ring carbine butt plate for sure.
Fantastic bunch of 64! Rarely do you see 64 for sale around here.
One day the stars will align and I'll find one without having to sell a kidney to get it!
You never know what's going to walk into the trading post!
I stopped in there about a hour ago looking for some 32 spl. No luck finding any ammo.
Somebody brought in a 1901 made Winchester 94 in 30wcf.
Long octagon barrel Looked like maybe a 26 or 28 inch barrel.
I didn't get to handle it, Very little bluing left, but overall nice shape!
Price tag was $1,350.00! Nothing cheap anymore.
That old model 53 in 25-20 is still there.
That 53 has been haunting my dream's!

Standard length for a 94 rifle is 26".
If it was 28, give them the money. That is a very rare length. Not often did someone pay and wait for a special order for 2" of barrel.
I got a 73 in 32-20 once with a 26 inch barrel and set trigger. Standard is 24 inch and they missed it. Wasn't much of a score. It is rough and I hung it on the wall. It would be awesome in better condition.
Funnily enough, they sometimes get missed by those who haven't seen them. Most don't measure.
I ALWAYS do. It's the ones that are a fraction of an inch short from a crown repair you have to be on guard for. Especially on short magazine guns.

I have a 26 inch Marlin 1895 45-70 that's 26 inches.
This Winchester seems like the barrel is longer.
I'm thinking 28 inches, so special order!
Unfortunately I'm going to need a new used pickup or SUV soon.
If it's special order it has to worth a good buck.
Ill pass by there Thursday afternoon some time.
If it's still there I'll give it a good lookover!
Measure the barrel and check bore and functionality.

Yup. Check it out. Most won't notice 2" over. As I'm sure you know, measure from the breach face, not the front of the receiver.
