May have acquired another free shotgun.

Post by gamekeeper »

Paid a visit to my pal the local dealer today and he said have a look at this pile of junk shotguns and see if there's anything interesting. Well everything I looked at had bores so pitted they were all scrap, then at the back of the pile I noticed a bolt handle so I pulled it out and it was a Spanish copy of the Mossberg 183, it was red rusty all over and the bolt was rusted shut, I got the bolt to move so I could check the pitting only to see a pristine shiney bore :o My pal said £20 and it's yours :? I replied I don't need another .410 and it may still look like Pelosi when I've cleaned it up, ok you can have it for nothing :) well in socialist Britain I have to have it registered on my license, so I said I'll restore it first and see if I like it enough to keep. I have had three such bolt action .410s already so not exactly excited about getting another one. Anyway ten minutes with steel wool and it's working fine. The stock has been worked on by someone who doesn't like wood but I may be able to salvage it.

Sounds like quite a deal. Free's good. What does it cost to add it to your license?

Not much hunting around here that I could use a .410 on. Doves are sort of hard to hit, and I am not good with a shotgun. A .410 just adds another layer of difficulty to it for me. I use a 20 gauge or 12 gauge. If we had a place to hunt squirrels, a bolt action .410 should be great.
Hope your new shotgun hits where it is pointed.

It doesn't cost anything to add a shotgun but adding a rifle can cost about £30. I just don't want too many shotguns on my license as the police can demand extra security storage and I'm trying to whittle down the herd to only guns I frequently use. If I should move from my present home it can be difficult finding accommodation that allows firearm storage as the rules are pretty restrictive.

The price was right GK! :D

What do they consider a rifled slug barrel for a shotgun? Could you get a twofer with a shotgun with 2 barrels?

A rifled shotgun barrel is classed the same as a rifle so more hoops to jump through, we even have to jump through hoops to buy rifled slugs
Our firearm laws are soon to be tightened even more, obsolete calibres in antique Firearms are to be outlawed, in case criminal gangs start reloading antiques to shoot one another. :?

Only Fools And Horses would reload obsolete calibers to avoid such Draconian laws. I was under the impression that the criminal network, including access to guns, was Open All Hours. So where do they hide them? Somewhere on Coronation Street? Maybe in cases of the Last Of The Summer Wine? In the houses of their Good Neighbors?

It seems that the your Government isn't really worried about crime. They are just Keeping up appearances. Maybe they could put Inspector Lynley on the case. Of course after all the politicians are caught taking bribes, they will publicly see their Vicar Of Dibley, or if Catholic, they will confess to Father Ted. Then they can all go to a nice jail with private cells and meals cooked by Chef.
Did I miss any?

Sorry it's such a hassle for you buddy. I fear we aren't far behind you now.

Bill it's no prize  I removed all the rust and cold blued all the metal but the beech wood stock is not a pretty sight, I discovered a couple of small cracks not significant but the previous owner had done a real bad job, drilling holes and removing the varnish, so I just quickly rubbed it down and applied antique oil. It loads and chambers three rounds ok and fires and ejects ok too but I will take it back to the dealer to sell it's not something I need as I have better .410, at least I have saved it from the scrap bin..

Interesting looking piece there. What cold blue did you use? Some of your compatriots are using Ballistol Bluing on air rifles, from what they're telling me on one of the forums. Some of their results like quite decent, at least in the pictures. That stock really does need something... glad you got it up and functioning.

Birchwood Casey Super Blue is all I have at the moment, I have used 44/40 cold blue in the past with good results. I realised whilst doing it that I wouldn't be keeping it hence the quick job...

Price sure was right.......around here a .410 will sell faster than any other ga. provided the buyer already has a 12 ga.

Curious, if all of your guns are on a license what happens if you lose it? I've known more than a few guys who set their guns on the roof of their car or leaned it against the fence post and then went home only to find them gone on a drive back.----6

Lose one and the police will ensure you lose all of them...
I had to report a lost shotgun once to the local police but I had a good idea where it was, (under two foot of snow) the cop gave me a couple of days to find it before writing it up, thanks to the local preacher and his metal detector I found it in time..

G-K, just had a thought  dont wanna side track yer thread but was there ever a 28 gauge bolt action shotgun? I'm slowly warming up to the thot of a short barrelled 410 or 20 gauge bolt.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Bolt action shotguns, other than Webley .410s are scarce in the UK, I have been searching for a 20 gauge for years and as yet not even seen one. A 28 gauge bolt action is something I have not even heard of.
Bolt action shotguns are very underated in my opinion they may be cheap but the late Gough Thomas a British gun writer and a very " traditional one" said in his book "Shotguns and Cartridges" the bolt action is one of the best handling and we'll balanced shotguns he has tested.
I know that at one time Baikal in Russia were making some interesting bolt action shotguns in various gauges but I never heard of any being exported.

When I was in the trade I resleeved an experimental 16 gauge side by side for Gough Thomas, his books are are worth reading if your interested in shotguning.
