I am a little confused. Why use steel balls in a muzzleloader? Wouldn't lead be easier on the bore?

My favourite muzzle loading smoothbores is my Euroarms 12ga magnum Cape guns.It looks like one of the old English percussion single barrel smoothbores

Using .55 balls from a Layman mold, 90 grains volume of Pyrodex RS, and a .010 patch lubed with Dutch Schultz's dry lube formula, my TC .56 smooth bore will print sub 3 inch groups at 100 yards.
Smooth bores can be very accurate with careful loading.

After examining my file of targets, change that to sub-6 inch groups. Still, don't underestimate the accuracy potential of a smooth bore.

How about two balls instead of buck shot.
My 45 shoots two .445" very well to 50yards (smoothbore).
I don't use patches in smooth bores either. Just a stack of overshot cards. Lube for fouling control and card on top.
Forget the dry lube nonsense!
