1892 firing pin

Post by hiram »

I have a Win 1892 early model(large firing pin). Unfortunately it broke and I got another. I am having a heck of a time fitting it. If you rotate it 180 degrees, it slides right in. If I try to put it in the way it should be, it goes in but the pin does not seem to line up with the hole in the bolt. I can get it in but I have to push. It does not slide easily. At first it slid in half way. I had to alter the diameter. I tried to copy the dimensions of the original. What would you do? Thanks.

Sorry I can't help but I've bumped your question to the top. There must be someone here with the know how.
If you use the search you will find 3 pages of information on 1892 firing pins.

Sounds like you've hit on why it broke? If it doesn't drop into the bolt freely, then once it's fired a few times it will likely break again. May need to take the bolt and firing pin to a gunsmith, and have the alignment issue fixed.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious . Turning the 92's firing pin 180 degrees puts the flat side of the FP up into FP's front hole. . Put it correct side up and any crud or rust inside the FP hole near the breach face end will put the FP out of alignment. Could even have been the cause - previously in a bind to cause the old firing pin to break.. So first thing I'd do - and you probably already done it- I'd wire brush inside that hole with some Hoppes #9 .Inspect the hole closely for burrs raised by broken pin.
An important clue would be the answer to this question - where did the old firing pin break?

Ignore me if I dont make sense ,clearly conveying ideas has never been my strong suit.

The hole in the bolt can get battered in a few places and this can cause the Firing pin (FP) to bind. Places like where the FP retaining pin goes in. There at the back where the hammer hits the FP. If the FP is a bit short there the bolt will crater in a bit. A round file will cure some of those issues. But,You can probably just reduce the dia. of the FP a bit more for clearance.

I got the firing pin to slide smoothly. It seems the rear end of the pin was a little oversized. It would slide in, but when the front end(pin) reached the hole there was binding. I filed the pin hole a small amount and reduced the diameter of the body perhaps .001--.0015. Now it slides as it should. I will be posting another issue but I'll write it here since some of you were interested to look at this post you might look again.

On closing the action, the last inch of lever movement is firm. The collar at the end of the spring on the ejector keeps slipping off the shoulder. Would the collar slipping off cause difficult closing?? Does anyone have the inside and outside diameter of the collar??

Thanks for any feedback.
