On The Road Again

Post by JimT »

I made the trip from our place in Texas to my daughter's in Oklahoma on Saturday. Had a nice uneventful trip. As I was getting near to her place I decided I would stop and fill up the tank and eventually came to a little old-timey station on the side of the road.

Driving in I found the gas pumps to be "old-timey" also. No digital stuff on them anyplace except the gallons and the price. I asked a guy who was getting gas, "Can I use a credit card here?" and he said I would have to go inside.

So I walked in and this older gentleman was behind the counter. I told him I would like to fill up my tank and could I use cash? He said, "Sure." I asked him if he needed my ID or something and he said, "Are you going to drive off without paying?" I said, "No sir." He said, "This is one business in America where you are still treated like an honest citizen unless you prove otherwise."

It was so refreshing. Like stepping back in time 30 years. I thanked him for his amazing attitude.

Not sure about other places but folks here are acting like life is normal .. no masks .. no stuff about virus's ... friendly .. and gunfire! People shooting in their back yards, having fun.

Some of my grandkids came up yesterday and we spent a couple hours shooting in the back yard where I set up a shooting range last March. I am building some more shooting tables and some target stands to add to the range.

Weather is amazing. It was 105 in Texas. It's 88 here today for a high and in low 60's at night. (for those in the UK .. 31 for a high, 16 for low) I am enjoying it.

When I see those old time gas stations on the movies, I always think of how it used to be over here too, in my teens I used to buy my .410 ammo from a gas station way out in the sticks on my way to the farm where I had permission to hunt.
Glad to hear you're having a great time... :D

Oklahoma is different from anyplace else. My favorite area used to be Turner falls. Still like the dunes and the little lake known as Maude Thomas' bath tub.

Have fun Jim. Yes there are pockets of "normal" where not much has changed. I live in a rural area My one neighbor is always looking for attention and was shooting the .22 at 7:25 this morning. He thinks it's bothering Me, as I have told Him before "that's the sound of freedom". I may shoot the 45/70 this afternoon and we will see how He holds up .  . Have a safe trip.

Hi Jim,
We did get a cool night last night. Got into the high 60's. But it got hot quick. It's back to 90 now and will to mid 90's or more by evening.
