My best Cane

Post by Pitchy »

I found this stick in Texas years ago and made a cane from it, put a Diamond Willow handle on it.
Not sure what kind of wood it is , a vine wound itself around it as it grew. :)

the hickory thumb stick is from a hurricane cleanup in Virginia a while back. Old Irish pattern with Turk's Head

the middle one is used for levering generators around or swatting mosquitos, whatever
mostly used for getting up off the deck in the bookstore, or walking up the incline towards Hurricane Hill

the short one is always with me in the truck because, well, black blades matter
and it has a long shaft which makes it less bloody to carry, but also more unwieldly

Sadly I use one regularly. But it's a store bought aluminum number. I do have a solid stainless steel cane. It's been sitting in the corner for about a year. I need to cut it down to fit. Just haven't gotten around to it.

Nice one Lenn -- I like it!

I found a similar one years ago while deer hunting -- went back on Sunday to get it. It's neat and has "character", like yours does, but it's just a tad undersized to make a good cane.

( Not that I need one yet... )

Thanks, i don`t use it much as it`s to heavy, use a regular wood cane that belonged to Norma`s Grand mother. :)

That's got some serious character, Lenn. Good eye for spotting it in the first place.
I tend to use a walking stick to help with the "cripplement," but have a cane I made from an aspen branch around here somewhere.

I ran over my favorite cane yesterday with the lawn mower. It had been my Grandmother's and then my Uncle Bob's. Hated losing it but I mostly use a staff made of cedar. My place has many cedar trees and the lower branches die and dry there. I just try to find the straightest ones for staffs.

About 50 years ago, my Uncle was making these out of palm fronds he collected in Florida...This one was for my Grandpa, but it found it's way to me quite awhile back. I use it around the house quite a bit....Been thinking about fitting a bird's head handle for it.

I don't have the pictures anymore, but a few years ago I made a cane for my Dad out of Black Walnut with a warthog tusk handle. I posted it here one time.

Gramp always used a staff and he drilled a 1/4 inch hole at eye level and would peer through it for longer distance, he said it helped get a clearer focus. My father who had cattle when he was young used to say every cattlemen needs a bull arrogant idiot cane for the auction. And it was made from a dried bull unit and spar varnished to protect it from moisture.
My self it's a hickory staff but last trapping season my knee was real bad and I was wishing for a good cane has I walked through the muddy fields. Pitchy has inspired me to keep an eye out for a proper aid for the used and abused old knees!

Sounds cool piller, i carved a head of Nixon on a cane once i have no idea why.

EdinCT the hole in the staff sounds interesting will have to try that. 8)
The thing i hate about canes is keeping track of it i`m always leaving it somewhere , that and it falling over need a hook on it to attach to my belt.

I always find canes fascinating but thankfully I don't have a use for one. It is always neat to see some of the interesting canes though.

Thanks Rube, no one asked but the handle on the last cane isn`t steam bent it was cut out of a thick oak board the n shaped with a side grinder then pegged to the shaft.
I wanted the handle thicker so not to put so much pressure on the center of my hand because i have arthritis in my knuckle.

Really nice Pitchy.! My Great Grandmother was a Mississippi lady almost as big as grasshopper. From as early as I can remember she always carried a cane black wood with a beautiful silver handle dainty and elegant...even the 16 or 18 inch polished blade that came out with the handle😳. No idea where it is now but that was eye opening for a little redneck fella. Steel magnolia indeed.

I think most of us outdoor types appreciate a good Stick, Hazel is a common source of good sticks here in England but Blackthorn is a better wood especially if you want to use it for cracking a few heads..🤕

Tommyknockers is a Welsh mining term. The Cousin Jacks brought that belief with them to the U.S. The Irish would have adopted the term, but it didn't originate there. Boggan and Fear Dearc were more along the lines of what the Welsh called a Tommyknocker.

hard to keep all the terminology straight, and the crossed wires of my gene pools make me liable to multiple factors who all want to tear each other's throats open. it's deep down in the code, at the level of the penny whistle to annoy the anti-bagpipe regulations . . . , with genes on both sides of the rifts Yikes :!:
