A little sawmilling

Post by Pitchy »

First milling of the year, fell a 70 foot white pine last week so fired up the mill got about 70 nice boards out of eight logs.
Just hauled in another 18 white pine logs from a neighbors and going after another load tomorrow so will be sawing more.

Nice pile of lumber. Do you have a bandsaw or a large circle blade mill?

Thanks for the videos Lenn. I watched both the videos. Remind me what you're powering the mill with? When I had a mill about the same as yours I tried to run it with my A John Deere which wasn't enough. I still have the 37 Buick engine which came with it.

Thanks gents, the mill is a Howel not sure i spelled that right
It`s powered by a International six cyl. gas engine at about 55 HP.
I got the engine basically free about 30 years ago because the guy couldn`t get to run right, tightened the intake manifold bolts and it ran perfect.
I`m going to have about 25 more logs to saw after today so will make more vids. :)

Just love these Lenn. You sure got some nice boards out of that first log in the second video. Good to see you feeling well enough to run your mill. Is that a "peavey" you used at about 4:45 in the second video to position that log? You run that thing like you were born doing it. Pleasure to see.

great projects. making mulch and lumber at the same time... is the white pine the same white pine preferred in northern new england by boat builders??? I know you are a long way from there, but thought you might know about the version of white pine you have. I talked to a boat builder in Chesepeake Bay and he couldn't tell me the difference or a source. It was a favorite of dory builders when they could still get the fat logs...

We did some sawing this morn and got a bunch of nice 12 inch wide boards until that darn Devil showed up and threw the saw dust chain of three times so we shut down.
Going to go work on that now, vid coming in about a hour.

A Peavy is called a Cant Dog in these parts. They were used heavily during the old river drives but are still in use.

As far as I know a can't hook has a blunt end and a peavey has a spike at the end. Amazing what one guy can do with logs using a hook. Been using them for years.

Pitchy: have you ever utilized a solar kiln for drying or just let the wood air dry?

I recall the sawyers of my grandfather's and father's generations saying that for air drying, it was at least 1 year per inch of thickness. I can still see the open on all 4 sides roofed "sheds" with the lumber stickered and stacked with a weight on top the pile. And they were particular about the stickers -- had to be the same species as the tree -- and stacked neatly with the ends of the wood sealed with a wax or was it paint(??) to help prevent splitting. The old timers sawed a great amount of beech and maple each year along with some pine.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Thanks piller and Ray, ray we strip stack and i cut the logs longer than required meaning say a eight foot we cut and extra four inches so if the boards split on the ends it can be cut off.
These logs have been sitting for a few years so are dryer than usual so i`m hoping the boards will be usable next winter when we do most of wood projects. :)

Old nails/hardware are something else. Lost count how many times I've been chainsawing through a tree trunk and the sparks fly. It's worse on a sawmill.

Some times if ya get lucky the nail will miss the tooth and go in the gullet and cut it off but if there`s one there`s usually hit another.

Is your International a flathead or OHV? OHV are the Diamond series made in three sizes. I had a BD220 (Black Diamond) on my concrete breaker. What a workhorse!

I still have a shop manual for those engines if you can use it and want it. PM me with mailing info.

My cousins in southern Alberta had those on their irrigation pumps back in the 60's when I spent the summer there. Eventually replaced with Chrysler Industrial V8s. Irrigation sets kept getting bigger and the little engines couldn't keep up.

Thanks Grizz, Larkbill it`s a overhead valve eng thanks for the offer on the manual but recon i don`t need it.
The eng. is a UC 221, it`s about wore out just changed the plugs and they`er all oily but it`s been a good engine for around 30 years.

Re: A little sawmilling

Those things are tough. Mine ran in concrete dust constantly for over 30 years and finally the compression got low enough to make it hard to start in really cold weather. I bought a derelict pickup so I could have an engine ready to swap in to the breaker and when the machine shop looked at it they recommended just ball honing it and installing standard rings.

I did, plus put in new bearings even though the old ones were usable. Those engines have case hardened cranks.

Mine ran great and used no oil after I got done. Maybe you could do an in place rebuild.

We`re on the same page buddy, couple years ago it had water in the pan ,my fault i didn`t check it started it up and went to sawing and the oil pump was froze up.
Main bearing froze on the crank so hauled it to the shop and put new bearings in it and off we go sawing again, your right and that`s what i should do but it hurt so bad getting down putting the plugs in it today i can`t get er done.
It`s hurtin and so am i. :)

Wish I lived closer, I'd come help you do it. Love to see old things that still do the job. I collect and use old outboards.

My brother enjoyed your videos but said he'll stick to his Lucas mill. He has an old school bus body he uses to season his lumber. Naturally solar heated and runs a couple low speed fans from Surplus Center. Almost all oak around here.

We cranked up the mill yesterday morning to saw some logs left over, ran perfect last time we used it but as with all things that are old like ourselves breakdowns seem to happen more often.
Didn`t get the first log sawed and the carriage cable cam off on one end so we spent a half hour putting it back on with the saw half way through a log.
Tried sawing again and it came off the other end and the cable wrapped around the shaft on the cable drum which of coarse is right under the carriage we couldn`t move.
So we ended up disconnecting the cable from the carriage so we could get enough slack to fix it which of coarse has been clamped on for 30 years or so.
Finally got it fixed and got back to sawing, wonder what`s going to go wrong today.
