Considering a shot gun

Post by J Miller »

OK, it's been many summers since I've had a shotgun. I'm still sitting on my "stimulus funds" and was wondering what would be a decent / good, general purpose, not expensive shotgun that would be reliable enough to keep around as a HD gun?
I'm not much of a hunter so I don't really want - need a long barrel hunting gun.

Any suggestions??

Anything that strikes YOUR fancy!
There are lots of great used guns on the market, 870, 500, 1100/1187, A5 , moder 12 - the list goes on.
If you are more inclined for a double gun , CZ makes some nice reasonably priced SxS . Few other makers now making very nice inexpensive O/Us as well.

For the amount of lead-per-minute-per-dollar it is hard to beat a Mossberg Pump in any of the iterations. For home defense I think an 8-shot makes the most sense, although if you want something more compact, you can get the 5-shot ones. We have an 8-shot Mossberg with an aftermarket pistol-grip so it is both short AND high-capacity. I think it cost $300 or less, including the pistol-grip.

Now if you want to spend lots of money, there are many fancier ones.....we ALSO have a Saiga-12, that can use anything from 5 round box magazines to 20-round drums. The capacity isn't all that likely to be needed, but it is a VERY fast semiauto, and seems to feed about everything we put in it.

Joe, I know the 12 gauge is King but don't disregard the 20 gauge for home defense, there are in my opinion some advantages with the 20 for domestic situations.

Joe,
If you have local dealer that will do inexpensive transfers ($25-$35) for you, hop on Gun Broker and look through the used pump shotguns. There's always some police trade 870s and Mossbergs in decent shape for $250-$350. Some even have rifle or Ghost Ring sights. I almost picked up another one the other day but I found a deal on a Blackhawk I was looking for. Be sure to check out their feedback and watch their shipping charges, some of them get a little carried away.

20 ga. Single shot ... 20" barrel. Handy. Easy to use. If you learn to run it you can fire, reload and fire again durn quickly.

I have a Mossberg, and had my old 870 Wingmaster in 20 gauge fitted to my son. Either brand will do a great job.

I purchased a 20 ga Tristar G2 Semi Auto Youth Model several years back. One of the softest shooting guns I have ever owned. My youngest daughter will be moving out into her own home this month, it will be the primary gun that she will take for keeping house.

I still have lots of 12 ga ammo from years back. So since I;m not really a shot gunner I'll stick with what I have.
I've been looking at them on line and like the 8 shot Mossberg 590 Retrograde version. Now to find someone that has one I can look at.

Or you could go the NFA route, and get a Striker folder....

Image

I sold mine at a loss due to the 'reclassification' of it as an NFA 'destructive device' and it took up WAY too much room in the unsafe.

However, it WAS an easy-to-shoot, low-recoil (cuz it weighed a ton) keep-loaded-forever (no tensioned springs) 12-shot 12-gauge, and was so INTIMIDATING-looking, that I doubt anyone it was pointed at would keep doing bad-guy things...!

go handle a few and see what suits you best.

I've always like the mossberg 500 better than the rem 870

Except I do really like a pardner pump that I got that is supposed to be a clone of a certain version of the 870. I've read really good reviews on it. Before Remington shut down H&R, they offered a pardner pump protector which was a tank of a gun for less than $200! I have the youth pardner pump, and I put a full size rem stock on it. Love it.

I think a Mossberg 500 Field / Security combo would do you well.

Security for main needs and could give clays a try with the 28" barrel
