Primer pocket thingy?

Post by hondo1892 »

Guy what do you call that tool that removes the crimp in the primer pockets on military brass? I need one but don't know what it is called.

'Primer Pocket Swager' . . . may go by other names depending on the maker.

Thanks a lot. I was thinking a pocket reamer but the swager sounds right.

RCBS makes one I found useful, that you use on a reloading press.

Dillon makes the super swager. It has been reliable and as user friendly as can be expected from this tedious process.

I use the pointed end of my hand held RCBS deburring tool. Just a few quick turns is all it takes.

K.I.S.S.! For a bit over 25 years I have been using an plain counter sink. When I first encountered primer crimps, I immediately thought of a countersink (lifelong machinist/mechanic). I have no count on military crimps removed, but I have had zero problems, quick, easy and inexpensive. (9mm, 5.56, 7.62x51, 30-06 and 303 British). https://www.mcmaster.com/countersinks/h ... -screws-9/

Swaging removes the crimp without removing any brass and gives a uniform primer fit. The Dillon Swage is excellent but costs three times as much as the RCBS Swag set and needs to be mounted permanently to the work bench. You decide if speed is worth the additional cost. There is a good video on YouTube on the RCBS set. I use the RCBS set. There is a slight learning curve when using the RCBS to get the hang of feeding the case over the mandrill rod without fumbling ,but after a short time it is an easy to use and accurate tool.

I prepared several hundred 223 cases last week with a hand reamer and countersink. The one I used is a 3 blade 82 degree which I chuck up in the drill press. The reamer I use to be sure the crimp is gone. I broke so many decapping pins that I started hammering them out with a Lee decapper. Works a treat.

If I were processing a bunch of crimped cases I'd spring for the swaging tool but for my occasional use I just chuck a regular drill bit (something a bit larger than the diameter of the primer pocket) in my rechargeable drill/driver and go after them. This seems go considerably quicker and with less problems than the old reamer (Lyman I think) I used to use.

I've always removed the pocket crimps with a rotary countersink tool for metal. Mine has a 1/4" shaft and makes quick work in my battery drive drill motor. Most hardware stores have them for $5-$8 in small sizes.
