Curly Maple Marlin 336

Post by J Miller »

I've wondered why they didn't use curly maple stocks on cartridge guns for a long time, so when my wife showed me this one, I fell in love with it.

Supposedly this is a from a facebook repost, but I wonder if there are any still available?

Curly maple? Yes!!!

Nice figure in the wood? Yes!!!

But to me, the "blonde" finish is too bright -- I'd rather have a gorgeous "redhead or brunette" like you typically find on nicer flintlocks.

I do not generally like light colored wood stocks at all. But I own a couple old guns restocked in birdseye maple, and find them very attractive. Not as light colored as the 336 posted above, so the warmer color is OK for my eyes.

Agreed. I compared it to the muzzle loader elsewhere on this page and the darker one is nicer.

I like those prices better than the MSRP listed on the Marlin site.

Blonde like that will darken some but it's too white for me. Iodine makes a nice warm greenish brown without covering up the grain, probably be what I'd do if I bought one of them.

I’m definitely more a Walnut partisan. A darker stain on the Maple might do it for me.

Wood like that belongs on a Pennsylvania or Kentucky long rifle! Still look good on them Marlin's tho..... todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I like maple on a gun but maple does not machine as easily as walnut and in my experience using both woods for other purposes, maple is more prone to cracking.

This post reminded me of an old picture I have in a Colt book. Original Lightnings from long ago. (Took me quite some time to dig these out of the safe for a photo session. :D )

Grice in PA is big on getting special runs of maple stocked guns both lever and bolt guns . They had a run of Browning Model 52 22LR’s in maple as well as Remington 541-T’s . Think they even did some 870’s and 11/87’s . I had a Ranger Arms 25-06 that was made back in the late 60’s to early 70’s that was tiger stripe maple . That was a LH gunni had bought for the boss but I couldn’t let myself cut the stock to fit her so I sold it and tripled my money

CDNN has auctions for curly-maple leverguns (Winchesters) almost every week. They are indeed beautiful!
