Very nice ! You’ve put notions back in my head for a James River Valley school longrifle in 54 or 58 caliber . Before I meat my maker I’d like to plunk one deer with a rock lock .

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Very nice gun, and left hand lock. I am left handed and have a custom 54 cal flint lock rifle with a left hand lock very close to the one you have. I also have a 69 cal smooth bore fowler. I always wanted a 36 or 40 cal for squirrel hunting. But so far I have not gotten one. I like the fowler with shot loads and find it a lot of fun, but it's loud, and would prefer the lower report of a lightly loaded 36 cal for squirrel hunting.

I really like what you did with this gun. Very nice!

Nice rifle. Does it have wide or narrow rifling grooves? I've built rifles with both and found that the wide groove rifling shoots better with a wide range of charges.

I am a little envious of your skill and rifle! I have never shot a flintlock but shot cap locks for fifty years, I need to fix that.
It seems like when I have the money none are to be found and when I find one I have no money!

Wide groove narrow land so hopefully not picky and shoots well. The last one I finished had the same style rifling in .40 cal and seems to shoot about anything well plus they load easier.

I think this is about number 10 that I have built so am getting better at avoiding mistakes but each style and school has their little gotcha areas. Things can get really cramped in the forward lock area when trying to squeeze in the ram rod , lock bolts, and trigger guard retention.

Sweet ! Iron mounted mountain rifles are my favorite. I prefer .40 cal just to get the thicker ramrod. You built a very nice rifle.
