Very Nice! I plan to build one someday. I'm using a gas forge now, but I have a hand crank blower for the charcoal/coal fires...

Something relaxing about heating steel until it's plastic and beating the snot out of it

Except now you need some little kid to operate the pushrod so you can 'beat the snot out of steel '

That is so cool! I need to build me a forge but at my age I don't need another project.

Now that looks cool.

Didn't know it was a Japanese thing though.

they pump air on both strokes, and it doesn't require much force to work it. there is a vertical version with a pump handle arrangement to run the piston up and down, like a barrel pump sort of, a more compact arrangement.

Itinerent smiths would travel around doing ad hoc metal work, sharpening blades I suppose, and fabricating.Their few tools fit inside the box. the side blast facilitated making a fire with a couple of rocks on either side of the coal bed. Viking smiths did the same side blast thing with bellows for the air supply.

this is a great project Pitchy. Makes me want to play hookey and play with the hot stuff...

Thanks Grizz, the original had glass plates around the plunger board to make it slide smoother this one is a little stiff yet but i`m sure it will wear in. :)

Very kewl beans Lenn! I have seen those forge blowers used in Japan by master swordsmiths to run the forges the used to forge Samurai blades. Very effective!

Awesome work Pitchy!

Add some tubing and a feeder for oxygen -- and you're in the ventilator business!

I'm not kidding... Seriously!

If I "need one" and they don't "have one", I'll tell my son to make one up in my shop and keep me breathing.

A forge and some knowledge were put to good use during WWII. My Grandfather was a Blacksmith, and he repaired a lot of stuff during the war. Farmers couldn't just go buy parts. If it broke, it had to be fixed. My Dad remembers helping his Dad fix and repair plows and things back then. Not everyone made knives or swords with a forge. Pitchy, your ability to make things is the sort of skill that made this Country so great. Forge welding to repair stuff may become a big thing again if the worst predictions about this virus come true.

That thing is so cool , it put My feeble mind in overdrive  , All I can see is the forge being setup by a small stream and the operating rod driven by a waterwheel. just like early gristmills. I bet it was done hundreds of years ago.?

my post vice is missing the flat spring, and someone put a big valve spring on it, which is a pain. so "someday" my post vice gets a standard flat spring AND a standard bench mount. I like your setup on the stand too.

Pretty neat, but I would probably blow it up. Some times when I start out with green coal and really get the fire going. If I stop cranking my blower I blow up my flex hose that's connected to the blower and it needs replacing. The first time it happens to you it can cause you to loose a load in your drawers. :o

that looks really good. I have a pipe tweer I can use in a ditch when I need to heat up big truck springs, and longer stock. the tweer fits into a small wash tub when I want that setup, otherwise it's propane for me. I can heat treat better in a propane fire vor some reason I don't get yet. Still sorting it out!
