Been having some great luck with Rugers lately.

Post by 2ndovc »

I have a customer with a little farm and he lets me go and shoot a bit when I'm out there. Set up an impromptu target from some furnace work and shot the new/ used Vaquero .44 Magnum. It was only about thirty five feet, nasty weather but I had a blast! I think I need a pair of these and a black cartridge belt and holsters to go with it. :D

Thanks guys. Arizona Grips on ebay. Not a fan of ebay but they only sell them through their site. Need a couple more sets. Fit is better than the factory grips.

Those were 240 gr. Blazers that I picked up several years ago on sale for $12.00 a box. Bought several boxes and down to the last one. Betting it will do even better with my hand loads. Can't wait to put it on the bench at 25 yds with my 24o cast loads and 300 Hornady flat points.

Good grouping. Ruger does make some accurate firearms.

Only because I've had a couple recently that couldn't group that well if you were standing on top of target. :D

Thanks Jay,

I really think I need two of them. :D I bought a SBH hammer for it. Just like that wide spur.

Not to knock Ruger, but I have seen that some of their revolvers are very accurate and some are not. My experience is limited, and is very minimal when compared to some others on this forum. If I have seen that about Rugers, it is highly likely that it is no secret. Several years ago, I got a .45 Colt Vaquero that grouped about 12 inches at 25 yards. I may not be the best shot around, but I can do a lot better than that with an accurate pistol. Even my super cheap Chiappa .17 HMR revolver and my even cheaper Heritage Arms .22 lr are capable of 3 inch groups at 25 yards on a good day. Usually they are 4 to 5 inch groups when I am just having fun and not really trying hard. Due to their mediocre accuracy, they are just used for fun and plinking. My Ruger Mark II semiauto is accurate with the CCI Mini Mags for about 1 inch or better groups up to 50 yards for me when using a rest. More than 50 yards and my eyesight and hand steadiness just are not good enough anymore for great grouping.

Exactly my point.
I've had a few that shoot all over the hillside but the .45 Bisley convertible and this new (Older model) Vaquero are great shooters. Close to my Bowen/ Old Model and good enough for me. The OM SBH has done 3/4" five shot groups at 25 yds. back when I could see better and saved my little dog from a an animal intent on doing harm a couple of years ago. This one fits me almost as well and almost as fast on the draw. It happened so fast, all I remember is my thumb on the hammer and Boom! Threat was taken care of.

I love my .44s!

I sold that Vaquero due to its terrible accuracy. I got my .45 convertible to replace it. The Blackhawk with both cylinders is capable of better accuracy than I am. I bought a .44 Mag Super Blackhawk off of CRS, and it is just incredible. So, I understand about how Ruger can be good or bad as far as accuracy.

Jason itsa great feeling when a good looking pistol not fits your hand but hits where you aim it. I always had good luck with Ruger pistols and revolvers. Todd

I found a 200th year of independance model Blackhawk in 45 Colt at a pawn shop in Rock Springs Wy back in the mid nineties. Wouldn't keep any load on an 8" paper plate at 25 yds. Called Gary Reeder and he said send it down. He took a 357 mag cylinder with blueing wear that matched my pistol pretty close, line bored it to 45 Colt, held cylinder throats to .4515, throated the barrel a bit and shot a inch & a half group and sent it back. Forgot how much it cost me, but it was a bargain! Best shooting Ruger I own.
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

That’s good shooting. I’ve got a Blackhawk Bisley in .45 Colt to go with my lever gun. I love it. I reamed the cylinder and throat to accommodate cast bullets. Made a huge difference in accuracy. I load 335gr WFNGC from Cast Performance in both rifle and revolver. I also have a .45ACP cylinder for it.
