LOP for home defense gun

Post by FLINT »

I've got a 12 ga pump that I'm setting up as a home/truck defense gun. It doesn't have a recoil pad on it right now and the LOP is about 12.25" and feels pretty short

Normally on my hunting guns I like 13.25 - 13.5 LOP

Should a defense shotgun have a shorter LOP for any reason?

The starndard 1" limbsaver pad would put it right at 13.25" which would be great for me for hunting.

Limbsaver also makes a compact pad which is 5/8" thick - which would put the LOP at 12 7/8"

what do you think?

Set the LOP for hunting, I'm sure you do a lot more hunting than having to defend yourself. If you practice gun mounting the muscle memory will take care of the rest. As a trap shooter I shoot longer LOP, I'm 5'10, but trap shooters as a whole are stock crawlers, I shoot 14.5" but my rifles are all about 13.75. Recoil pads are cheap so put the 1" on and if ya don't feel like it's right get a thinner pad.

Not exactly on point but I have a Mossberg 500 I put a M4 style adjustable stock on it. Originally this was to facilitate hunting with my sons so I could youth size the shot gun for a 10 year old and a 13 year old. However I found it worked well for me as well in the home defense role.

In the course of shooting the adjustable stock 500 and my M4gery Ar-15 the most comfortable stock length for me is ……… the same as my non adjustable stock AR-15 that mimics a M-16A1.

But the adjustable stocks look so much more tacticooler! Seriously they do offer some utility with adjustable LOP, which can be important with different circumstances (winter coat vs sweatshirt or adult vs youth) and might make some difference in storage (boat or motorhomes are notorious for cramped quarters)

Wm

P.S. The adjustable stocks for Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are pretty reasonable. Here are 4 different ones, all less then $80. Some less then $50.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking, but I also keep going back and forth on it.

yeah, those are cool, but I don' think they make one for a Stevens model 520 :D :D :D

I did get a pistol grip stock for my turkey gun and like that quite a bit

Yeah ….. 520 - that's old school!

The 520-30 and 620A were made as trench guns for the US military during WW2. My Uncle carried one as a boat captain (or whatever their title was) on Higgins boat during WW2.

Fun story - Uncle had one with a rudimentary shark carved in the butt stock. I asked him as a young man why a shark on shotgun. And he told me how one day while ferrying ammo to the beach and taking wounded back to the ship a couple days after the initial landings he saw shark near the surface. He shot it with the shotgun, hooked with a gaff, and pulled it on to the boat. They grilled it for dinner that night & traded some shark steaks for Japanese rice wine the Marines had liberated.

Navy and Marines …… one big happy (& slightly dysfunctional) family.

If it's mainly a utility and defense gun, I'd set it about how you like your rifles. The longer LOP for wingshooting isn't necessary for mostly level to ground shooting

Thanks, ok, I'll probably shoot for about 13 - 13 1/4" then.

I'm now trying to figure out the right pitch. I seem to prefer more pitch - like 5-6 deg
