I lernt what a "knot" was today....

Post by AJMD429 »

...the 'knoticle' kind, that is....

"The term knot derives from its former use as a length measure on ships’ log lines, which were used to measure the speed of a ship through the water. Such a line was marked off at intervals by knots tied in the rope. Each interval, or knot, was about 47 feet (14.3 metres) long. When the log was tossed overboard, it remained more or less stationary while its attached log line trailed out from the vessel as the latter moved forward. After 28 seconds had elapsed, the number of knots that had passed overboard was counted. The number of knots that ran out in 28 seconds was roughly the speed of the ship in nautical miles per hour."

From https://www.britannica.com/science/knot-measurement

Someone mentioned wind speed in another thread and it got me curious.

Over the years some measurements just seem weird...I guess once you use them a bunch, you internalize them and kind of think using them, and they seem natural. I got like that with metric stuff due to all the physics and chemistry in college.

Not to be confused with naught or nought.....

In one or two episodes on the telly, jethro bodine thought he wanted to be a double nought spy when he grew up.....

b.t.w., since you mentioned metric and chemistry, graduated medical sample tubes are great for black powder use with around 15 grains to a c.c.

Doc, I have a couple of nieces that like to have me on their team when play Trivial Pursuit on family nights. I tell them I'm the world's greatest depository of useless information. I'll bet we'd have a great time together. The problem with kids today is that they don't read.
I was in about the 4th or 5th grade when my dad, a general practitioner brought home a set of Britannica Jr and a full set of Britannica standard encyclopedias. I can't count the number of hours I spent reading through those things. I learned how to make a boomerang by reading those books.
I still love books. Thank you for your entries.

I just don't fathom it. Maybe Mark Twain could since he was deep in those water terms.

Ray, can you tell the difference between a CC and a Milliliter at zero degrees Centigrade? 4 degrees Centigrade? 8)

A nautical mile, 6,076 feet, is based on the circumference of the earth, and is equal to one minute of latitude. at the equator I think....A knot is the time it takes to traverse 6076 feet. Nautical miles also figure into the speed of the earth's rotation, 15 degrees per hour.

Yeah and what's fun about all the measurements (even things based on speed of light and such) is we keep updating what they're based on...so they change or become imprecise....it's enough to feed an OCD person's anxiety for a lifetime....

There's a good scene of that in "Master and Commander" if I recall.

Many old-time sayings had their origin in the sea or the military... A soldier whose gun didn't fire could be because it was "half cocked" and a sailor whose ship was leaking could be because it was "half caulked" (not the correct use of the phrase, but I've read it in several old nautical history books).
