brazing a sight rail on a browning 5

Post by rossim92 »

My son bought a browning 5. where the sight rail is brazed on has broken loose , but only on the the front two jonts.i It was result of a fire from when it was in a gun shop. he bought it dirt cheap and fixed all that was the was messed up except the sight rail. Anyway he can he can braze the bad spots back together with the barrel without taking rail completely off? will a dab of jb weld work ? any suggestions.

That is a do-able fix. I would clamp some aluminum heat sinks to the barrel/rib to prevent any further unsoldering and use Alstate 430 (soft silver that melts at 430 degrees) and Duz-all (a really good flux) to stick it back on. Brownell's rust blue will finish it off 'cause the flux will ruin the blue. All that said, let a pro do it.

I soldered a steel scope base to a steel magazine tube to make one of my Night Scout rifles:

I also did one with JB-Weld.

Both are holding up; I think the key is surface-preparation. I used a Dremel tool with the cutting wheel and cut lots of shallow criss-cross grooves in both pieces prior to assembly.
