Osage Orange Duck Call-new added.

Post by Pitchy »

Sixgun sent me a peace of osage orange a while back so i made a duck call out of it today, thanks Six.
This is my first attempt at making a duck call, the reed is tin from a pie plate.
Don`t laugh too hard about the sound.

Thanks GK, i don`t duck hunt but had to try the challenge of making one.
Most the aggravation is getting the reed just right, i ordered some factory reeds and will try them but am pretty pleased how it went today yesterday was pure aggravation.

I like it Lenn!

Not bad for your feeding calls/feeding chuckle, now get aggressive and try some HIghballs *, Come Back and Hen Mallard calls.

* Here's a link on "How to do a HIghball" call (click for link). There's some neat audio clips on there for ya; start listening at 1:59.

Great start, Lenn. Now cup your hands around it and really start bending those notes!
I love osage. There is some around here, mostly planted long, long ago. Makes fabulous bow staves, too. 8)

I think it sounds pretty good...but my hearing, with 10% in the left ear and 50% in the right ear even a fanny burp sounds good..at least mine do.

Indians used to make their bows from Osage orange and I make little things out of it...it's hard enough to drill and tap. It's hard getting a long piece that's straight as my wood supplier gives me firewood and it's usually all twisted up. Let me know, I can send ya more..you just have to give me a pm. I have a couple of pieces saved for Gunny when we do meet up.

I made this addition for my rifle rest out of Osage or. It's adjustable for about any sized forearm, even the BAR. Glued on hard foam rubber and by a mix and match method, anything fits and holds the gun tight, but not too tight. The knobs on the side are 5/16 x 18 thread and I tapped the wood for this thread size...been holding for a couple of years.

Osage or also makes great hammer and hatchet handles.------6

It`s hard alright but turns pretty easy, it`s the first piece of real hard wood i`ve ever turned and it is nice as it turns real smooth.
Cool hatchet handle and rest also and thanks again for the Osage.
I have a small walnut tree that died a few years ago i might cut down and see if there`s anything usable.

If you use a light coat of mineral oil, you can keep that Osage Orange from getting darker. Bois d'Arc (pronounced Bodark around Texas) gets nice and smooth and darker with age. Not many other types of wood are as tough.

Piller.....yep...it's really a neat color and one that I wanted to keep that way...after finishing I sprayed 3 coats of clear lacquer on the things I made from it.

Funny thing, in the last couple of days I burned up a wheelbarrow load of it in the wood stove.....it was all twisted and unusable for anything. I see these trees along the roads and have spotted a few that were straight and about a foot in diameter......thinking about asking the farmer if he is interested in selling it.....maybe I can ask him "can I have it?" :D ---6

Great job!
My friend, Doug Stiles ( a champion duck caller and call maker), once told me "don't be afraid to call, some of the sourest duck calls ever heard came from ducks."

Old hedge posts that have been in the ground for many years, will often produce calls that polish to a beautiful OD green color.

Little more shine, i`m not one of those expert wood workers that make wood look like glass.
But we`re making calls, the tin reeds need to go have some new reeds on order.
Thanks for getting a kick out of them.
This is one sick sounding duck.

I'd rater kill a couple of green head Mallards than an 8 point buck. Used to have a bunch of decoys and really spent time duck hunting but not in 50 years and I miss it. The whistle of those wings and oh, my blue wing Teal are tasty.

I used to wanna make a longbow out of Osage but never did . Now my shoulder are giving me problems so that’s a moot point . Osage Duck and or goose calls would be cool ! Also Osage scales for one of my 1911’s .

I was looking into getting a wood stove several years ago and I found that there were 2 categories of stoves. Some are made for wood, others will handle coal and "orange" wood. Come to find out the osage burns very, very hot. Wondering if anyone has had problems with that?

Warm up this weekend, in the thirties :)
Ya really have to be careful using woods that burn real hot in stoves, we have tamarack wood some have tried burning and warped, cracked and ruined stoves.
Back to duck calls, i`m impressed with the tongue pincher type it dates way back in call development.
Going to make another today. :)
