Just a steel bar, looks to me the original has a plug in the end of a tube and maybe filled with lead shot ?

Nice one there Lenn!

Here in the Boston area (well, OK -- I escaped to Maine 30 years ago...) we used call those:

TIRE CHECKERS

My Dad coached us that if we were ever caught with one by the Cops, the conversation was to go like this............

"Yes Officer, I do carry this 'Tire Checker' in my vehicle only to thump against the tires to make sure they are properly inflated."

"Why no Officer, no they would 'never be used' to protect myself against any thugs or miscreants -- that's your job! Thank you for your service!"

"Great, I can go -- and keep my tire checker? But 'use it only on tires'? Yes, of course! Awesome! Thank you Officer! Bye now."

Luckily, I never had to have that conversation...

Looks like you nailed it ! It's a perfect reproduction to my eye.
Now if a guy was really creative it could be turned into a piZ gun, but we know that's not lawful! :D

I haven't done any turning in a while, maybe I'll have to make some candle sticks for Christmas presents.

Nice job Lenn. Have you ever watched the BBC show "Last of the Summer Wine". One character, "Truly of the Yard", is always talking about having his truncheon in his pants. I'm sure you've created his truncheon.

I've read they used their pistol barrels and butts to bash heads too.

Believe it or not I made something like this in wood shop back in high school about 1982. It was copy of an old police baton and it was made of of Ash.

Got a B+ (our teacher never, ever gave out A.) on it and gave it to my Aunt who ran the Sands Bar. A few years later the IRS raided the place and I saw an armed IRS agent carry it out in a box of liquor from beneath the bar. It (and all the alcohol from the bar) never got cataloged and disappeared into the mists of time.

In 1961 I worked out of Jackson Wyoming. There was spotty illegal gambling in some of the bars back then. One BJ dealer would keep a innocent looking claw hammer on his table.

Thanks fellers, bet there were a lot of head thumpers around in rough areas.
Here`s what this one started out as a oak table leg, i don`t have a wood lathe everything is turned on the metal lathe using metal tools.

Lenn,I think what you made is really neat -- and you did a great job!

As a follow-up to my post above, I just had to Google "Tire Checker" and I've attached an image of the first hits that came up.

Turns out they're also called a "Tire Buddy", "Tire Thumpers" -- or if you're a fisherman like me (they're used to kill toothy bluefish or dogfish when reeled aboard) we would call them "Fungo Bats" (no idea where that odd name came from...)

Again, these aren't used to "check tires"........................

But that's what you tell anyone who sees you with one -- especially if it's weighted with lead or metal!

Fungo or hitting fungo is a fielding practice or warm up in baseball. A fungo bat is a lightweight bat used specifically to hit soft ground balls and easy loping flying balls.

When I was on the road and coaching you bet I kept a couple baseball bats handy. I still have a aluminum little league bat in my front hall …… its only 2&1/3 feet or so long but it is guaranteed to not bend, break, warp, or split upon contact and it has a nice, slightly sticky, rubber handle. It might be over kill for a fight in a phone booth but it should do just fine on the front porch if someone tried pushing their way in.

That said …… I would point out that a drywall or roofing hammer is a darn scary melee weapon but totally not out of place in a work truck or garage.

There are brighter lights now, but the old style Mag Light sure caused pain when it missed the tire and came into contact with any part of a human.

I remember seeing museum specimens of octagon shaped Korean police batons. Very intimidating.

Very nice Old West Baton!
But I doubt if weighting it with lead would be legal everywhere today.
