This post probably belongs over in the "Politics" discussion board.

I found this Research by the Pew to be helpful in understanding immigration issues.

Personally I find it difficult to keep this subject on a strictly objective, not emotional level. I currently and for several years interact with a lot of foreign borne students at the University. THe ethnicity and has flowed and changed. For example years ago it was a lot of engineering students, mostly male, from Saudi Arabia. Now that has tapered off and we have more students from India and Nepal. Still a lot of engineers but a lot of health care (nurses & occupational therapy) too.

Most are enthusiastic about America and Americans. They love this country.

P.S. America has always been a multi cultural society …… Most major metropolitan centers had enclaves of Irish, Italians, Chinese, Portuguese, Greeks, etc. that still exist today. Heck even in my relatively small town in Michigan of Bay City there was a German/Lutheran neighborhood, Jewish/Russian/Eastern Europe, Irish/Catholic, French/Catholic, WASP, Polish/Catholic. Back in the 1940's during my Mothers youth those lines were clearly drawn but over time they have gotten fuzzy and we enjoy weird fusions like Polish/Mexican music (Polka and traditional Mexican music and dance have a lot in common) or Irish/German beer from a local micro brewery.

IMO People are just People. They just want to get along, raise their kids, be treated fairly, and enjoy a little bit of life. There are always a few bad characters in any group. You can't let that skew your view of humanity.

BTW Lamm's speech is widely available. IMO I take a way a different lesson from it in that we should see in each other that which we have in common and celebrate that, emphasize that and not focus on what makes us different. it is easy to get hung up on the differences but in my experience they often just melt away.

The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

That plaque might be there, but Ellis Island had some very strict rules for immigrants. Not the least of which was that they be employable. Why, even Edison's intelligence was almost prohibited from immigrating due to his being crippled.

You must be thinking about a different person. Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio just a few miles from where I live. Nice little museum there. :D

Perhaps it worked like this: Edison was born in Ohio but his intelligence emigrated here later on? :D

Edison's intelligence was a German born Jew who was a cripple. After he got here, Edison suddenly had flashes of genius.

The product of materials that have been alloyed is often stronger and better that the original material. A salad, where all parts retain their separate identities, may have some appeal prior to getting chewed up and digested. Societies are much like that. Alloy and better the properties, or stay a salad and risk getting eaten.
