Turnbull ...........any others comparable?

Post by Pharmvet »

Regarding restoration and work done on lever guns, are there individuals or companies that are comparable in quality to Turnbull?

I've read and seen good work by Nonneman.

I'm not sure he is better then Turnbull. I'm not sure he isn't. I guess it depends on the specifics of the project. I think Turnbull's reputation among collectors is hard to beat but Nonneman has a reputation that is likewise pretty darn good among hunters.

My only experience with Turnbull has been VERY positive. His blueing is second to none. Then throw in the case coloring.....

I have dealt with both! My experience with both has been positive. Turnbull did a caliber conversion on a Brownchester M71 and Nonneman rebarreled a Marlin 1894CB. For what I did I would do again with each.

IMO, fellow board member Mike Hunter does as good work as Turnbull: http://www.mikehunterrestorations.com/test.html

Lee Shaver (published of the Single Shot Exchange) of Lee Shaver Gunsmithing did an outstanding job of color case on my old Rolling Block.

Here's the difference between Turnbull and most others.....more than a few guys can do excellent color case hardening. Two problems which Turnbull guarantees won't happen or he can do that others can't.....He will guarantee your action won't twist in the process.....possibly rendering a nice gun into a paperweight...or this....he has every roll die imaginable.....a nice color caseharded job looks stupid with buggered up or polished out lettering.

This is an 1873 in .22 short he did for a buddy of mine.---6

Absolutely. If we are talking color-case the most important thing when it comes to leverguns is knowing how to block them so they don't warp. Both Mike Hunter and Turnbull know how to do them.

I'm not as infatuated with Turnbull as the majority of gun people are. Not saying he doesn't do good work, but Mike Hunter and Al Springer both do equal or better work at better prices. I've used Al Springer for years and never been disappointed. I've always been extremely pleased with his prices too.
