Dremel tools- we all have one

Post by GunnyMack »

Well I have 2, one that struggles to stay at high speed and recently the other stopped spinning the chuck end.
Well I just took that apart, here is what i found.

The ivory colored coupler has detonated. A quick online search revealed these couplers are available! 2 pack from Amazon for 8 bucks! Sure beats buying a new one!

A common problem as they get older. Been through that myself.
Dremel Tools scare most gunsmiths. Especially when people try to engrave their own gun. :D

I bought a high quality Dremel tool about 30 years ago. It's a variable speed and has been a good unit. I also got the 4 ft. flex extension shaft and added that to it. The Dremel hangs above my gun bench and I use the flex attachment that's much smaller and easier to maneuver for whatever I need to shape.
Never had an issue with this Dremel except to replace the keyless chuck one time. I found a seller on Ebay who had 3 packs of the hand tightened chucks for my extension and bought three. Put one on and have never had to use the other two spares. I'd be lost without mine and never own one without the flexible extension.

Dremel tools in the hands of Bubba have probably ruined more guns than any other cause.

Just went through the same process, I guess we all get more brittle as we age! :| My old broken part was the same color and the new replacements were clear.

Dremel tools can move you from the "Hold my beer" moment to the "Aw stuff" moment faster then the law should allow.

I have 4 Dremels on my bench. Each one with a different cutoff/cratex/various stones. I have a spare and couple broke ones too. When I get down to no spare I box them up and send them to Dremel. They only charge about $20 to recondition them. Not worth my time to fix them myself

I have the Black & Decker versions. With the tungsten carbide rasp they grind glass like you wouldn't believe. I have used the felt wheels and other felt tips with jewelers rouge to polish metal. With a light touch you can put a high gloss on steel. Just be gentle. The slower settings and a light touch work great. Yes, I found out the hard way that speed kills.

I have 3 Dremels also... one electric, one battery powered that probably gets the most use, and one mini that would get used more, but without a removable battery, it's only used on small, quick jobs!

And yes, I've ruined a thing or two with one... luckily, not a gun!

Just me, but I find them too small/slow for larger jobs and way too much for small jobs where precision is needed.

The corded ones are brushed. The bushes are available from most hobby stores and I've change a few over the years but now I just send them back to Dremem for re-conditioned replacements.

I would be severely hindered without a Dremel tool. I use mine in making small gun parts where I need to rough them out. But I don't use mine to do finish work as they can take metal out faster than you'd like. But they do have a place. I can't even imagine making small piano wire springs for guns and not using my Dremel cutoff wheel? That piano wire will ruin sidecutters faster than almost anything! And for rough shaping extractors, or other small parts the Dremel is my go to tool. It gets things shaped up, and then my jeweler's files can do the final touchup.
People need to stay away from tools they don't know how to use, or where to use. But a Dremel used properly is a huge asset.

I don't let that Dremel of mine anywhere near my guns, except if I am inletting a stock for glass bedding, but nowhere near the metal. I keep my various files and stones near for that.

I'd never use my Dremel for stock work, even bedding. I use scrapers to remove wood for stock bedding.
