Attn Veterans

a word of thanks from a civilian

no one can fully appreciate what war has cost the losers, the winners, and the survivors, except those who have been there.

profound respect is due

thank you

I never understood what my father experienced until my son's went to Iraq. And so it goes and has always done.

Thank you!
I am happy that times have changed. I remember coming home and being told not to wear my uniform as I traveled.

Likewise. I was even told not to put my service down on civilian job applications. I never omitted it, I was proud of my service then, and still so today!

I enlisted in 1972. I was expecting to go to Nam, but didn't. At home, the hate for military was still on big time.

Was in the Tonkin Gulf on a destroyer. Did two tours to SE Asia on two different destroyers.
Flew home on leave after I got back stateside, while walking through Twin Cities Intl in Minneapolis in my dress whites to catch a connector flight to LaCrosse, had some gal walk up to me and call me a baby killer.
During my leave I mingled with a lot of old friends and quickly realized I had somehow changed......kind of felt like a square peg in a round hole.
Rambing a bit much.....sorry.
Wishing all of you vets a restful evening and my thanks to you !!

Things definitely changed. I was in '69-'73. In the beginning to get the military discount you had to fly in uniform. I got a small taste of what was coming at LAX when I went up there from 'Diego before heading home. I didn't get spit on but some did. It takes a special kind of stupid to spit on a Marine right out of boot, but I saw that too.

I was stationed in the south. Atlanta's airport was another bad one. I think it was spring '71 when they officially told us to fly in civvies, but the airlines had eased up even before that. The Hare Krishnas were really bad there. Very persistent.

I never miss a chance to tell my brothers and sisters who were actually "in country" welcome home. They were very poorly treated at the time and deserved far better.
