Gee, I can't connect with ALL of these, but I'm getting close!

I connect with all those, having been born in 1946.
I feel rather blessed to have experienced a United States that was quite different than it is today.
And a little sad that my grandkids and great-grandkids won't know what it was like.

'39 model here. I remember rationing during the war. Shoes, gasoline, tires. Daddy sold both his Auburns and bought a Model A that didn't run because it had a new set of tires on it. Both my parents came through the depression so they even saved string. We had a cow and a couple of pigs. I think I was about 18 before I realized we were poor. It was a different world. We would leave the house unlocked while spending the weekend camping and fishing. Dad only had 2 guns, a 16 gauge model 12 and a single shot 22 . We ate a lot of squirrels and ducks and geese and rabbits. Meat was rationed but we didn't care, we had our own. Daddy even cured hams and bacon and it was good!

Had a semi annual blood draw this morning, the phlebotomist and I were recounting how different trick or treating was during our childhood; few folks handed out store bought anything but some of those farm ladies could make your heart stop with their chocolate chip cookies or homemade fudge! Home dipped caramel or candy apples and the apples came off the tree behind the house and the sticks upon which they were impaled were split off kindling, sometimes our apple tasted a bit piney! Our parents didn't shadow us either, they just waited at home sometimes sharing a Miller High Life with their friends. And when your pillow case or flour sack was stuffed, everyone met up for a huge bonfire with hot cider and stale doughnuts for dipping.

I am 6 months older than the Charlie Brown Christmas. I remember the times before O.P.E.C. I remember being allowed to buy shotgun shells at age 13 because it was 5 AM of opening day and the Sheriff's Deputy standing beside the register at Kmart knew that all of us in hunting boots and insulated coveralls buying shotgun shells were going hunting. I remember my friends who were 6 months older than me being able to legally buy beer at 18. I couldn't legally buy until 21. I remember hearing that Elvis had died. I remember President Reagan being shot. I remember President Jimeh Kahtuh and the funny way he tawked. He would ask the person next to him to pious the biskits. I remember MTV, or Empty Vee as we pronounced it. I remember John Belushi and Gilda Radner. My Dad was born in 1929. He remembers seeing his brothers go off to war. The things he has seen are amazing.
