Funny Story Writer

Post by Grizz »

I recalled the name of the author I misremembered in the other thread. I bet almost everyone here has laughed out loud reading this man's stories in Outdoor Life and Field and Stream. I subscribed to one of those so I could read the back page stories. I bet you'all have favorite McManus stories too....

He was quite funny. I enjoyed reading his stories each month.

I have three of Patrick McManus' books, "Never Sniff a Gift Fish", "A Fine and Pleasant Misery" and "They Shoot Canoes Don't They".
I particularly liked his recurring character, "Rancid Crabtree". As I get older, I find myself turning into him. :)

I was sort of like Crazy Eddie as a kid. Not as crazy, but I was not quite all there back then.

I've come across a couple of his short stories but none of the books. I'll have to find one to add to huge pile of "to read" stuff....

We just love McManus stories around this house. There must be 8 or 10 of his books on our shelves. I subscribed to Outdoor Life for years just to get his story on the back page. My fave is called Rance and the Demon Bat. Or the one where Rance takes an old truck fender and a surplus parachute on the ice in a blizzard and ends up far from home. Great stuff for reading your 10 year old to sleep. Or yourself.

I have those 3 books myself... somewhere or at least my son does, or did. I wish that kid would let me die before he starts givin my stuff away.

I found if I read him in bed at night while the wife was trying to sleep I got yelled at a lot ... because I was laughing and sniggering the whole time ... making too much noise.

I used to enjoy his stories while I was waiting in the Chiropractor's office, sadly his replacement isn't near as humorous. I'll have to look for some of his books.

Check online at half price books. They have most of his books and their prices are good.

By the way, "The night the bear ate Goombah" is my favorite title of all time.
