Pilgrimage of respect

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Had an errand in Iowa last weekend -- delivering a piece of furniture to my daughter and son-in-law. Drove 2,580 miles in four days. Went via my brother's place in Fort Collins going up to a small village near Ames, then slashed southwest via Dodge City for the homeward leg. With its rolling hills and neat-as-a-pin small towns, Iowa is beautiful, especially in October, if not so much in February.
On the way home, I stopped early Monday morning in a town a dozen miles south of Interstate 80 -- Winterset, the county seat of Ford County. My purpose was to pay my respects at a tidy little whitewashed house on Second Street a few blocks from the courthouse. It was here on May 26, 1907, that a boy was born to Clyde and Molly Morrison. They named him Marion.
We know him as John Wayne.

Nice - I've never seen that before (thanks for posting it).

Those were the days when you just went to see a movie if John Wayne ( and a very few other stars, like Steve McQueen, etc ) was in it - and never bothered to find out anything else about the film before viewing.

I wish I had had time to wait another hour for the museum to open. I stayed that night in Dodge City, and the same deal -- the Boot Hill Museum didn't open until mid-morning

Growing up 90 miles from Dodge, and having relatives there, I saw Boot Hill several times. Still cool to see.

No, not that I remember. I was usually in the car with Dad driving. I have only been back to Dodge one time in the last 35 years.

One of my bucket list places I want to visit. Probably doesn't have any parking for an 18-wheeler!

I've been to JW's grave in CA. It would be great to visit his birth place on the next trip west.

Yep...I gave the town a miss, but the Overlook was very cool and worthwhile.

Wayne was pretty good. I enjoyed all his movies. He owes his fame and fortune to Yakima Canutt, and John Huston. He took instructions very well, indeed.

John Wayne and Yakima Canutt invented a way to get camera angles so that an on screen punch looked real. The two of them were friends, and Wayne's stunt man background helped when the two of them were practicing scenes.
