Finally !

Post by 6pt-sika »

Did a phone bid on an auction today and got quite lucky "I think" !

Bought a Parker VH 28 gauge 26" F&F on an 0 frame . For a 28 gauge this was an early one and made I think before the 00 frame was prevalent .

The little 28 was made in 1904 if I’m not mistaken the first Parker 28’s appeared in 1899 or 1900 . I haven’t been able to ascertain when the 00 frames started appearing but I suspect it may have been after 1904 .

Since I’ve got someone now to watch my pop some during the day I’ve been spending time at the shop . I suspect I’ll take one of the MEC 9000 28’s to the shop and load two flat’s with 9’s and two flat’s with 8’s . Might even load four or five boxes with 7 1/2’s in case I can go preserve pheasant shooting !

Congratulations! I'mm a really big fan of the 28 ga. My son keeps trying to tell me I should stick to the 20 ga but there's something about a 28 that just calls me. I only have one and it's an H&R Handi but it seems to fill a niche just perfectly. For time when the .410 isn't enough and a 20 ga is too much the 28 is just right.

Had to come for a double take, looking at the pics on a bigger screen it sure looks like that 28 saw use , honest wear and tear, nice to see the screws aren't buggered up, some case color left- you did very well!

Well done - nice 28ga Parkers are hard to come by today @ a reasonable price !

FWIW (Wikipedia):

There is some evidence that French and British gunmakers were producing 28-gauges as early as 1875.

Remington offered a 28-gauge single-shot in 1893, but Parker put the 28 on the map in the U.S. when it began chambering its side-by-side doubles for the gauge starting around 1900.

I need to search around a bit and see if I can get my hands on four or five boxes of the Brenneke 28 gauge slugs ! There was a group in Russia making versions of the Lyman 525 sabot slug for all gauges including the 28 gauge . I’ve already gotten their molds for the 10 and 16 . But I don’t see them offering it for the 28 any longer . I found them on EBay by the way .

Dunno about that one . I sent an email to the Rooskies to see if I can still get a 28 gauge version of the Lyman sabot slug . Already have that style slug mold for the 10 , 12 , 16 and 20 .

Just looked at Ballistic Products catalog- only slug for 28 they list is the light game slug. Wad/carrier and a single round ball, 193 gr .
I recently had a guy ask if I had or knew of slugs for 28. Told him about BP LGS but not a clue where to find a real slug.

Brenneke makes loaded ammunition for the 28 and I remember Jerrys had them in stock , however Jerrys is now belly up !

I'll most likely find somebody that carries them and get 5-10 boxes . Still it would be nice if I could get a mold and cast my own . Before I wrote this I got an email back from the Rooskies saying they had none of the 28's left and no intentions of making any more .

Looked and Ebay a few minutes ago and noticed the mold for the 28 gauge version of the Lyman sabot slug is for sale again !

Think I'll just have to get one of those Molds !

Still wanna find 5-10 boxes of the Brenneke 28 gauge slug ammo .

And of course I'll have to work up a buckshot 28 gauge load with #2 and or #3 buckshot 8)

I ordered the mold off Egretbay so hopefully I’ll have it before Xmas . I also figured out powder charges and buckshot payloads in the 3/4-7/8 ounce area with #1 , #2 and #3 buckshot . I was gonna buy a used 600 JR for loading buck and slugs but I’ve got a friends 28 gauge Grabber here and I think I can giter done with that or atleast I’ll try first . Wish I had the 600 JR 28 back that I sold to a friend for $75

When I previously said “worked out” , so far that’s just calculating powder charges and numbers of pellets for 3/4 or 7/8 ounce loads . As to whether they work in the wads I have is yet to be seen . That will most likely be a couple weeks . It seems every time I wanna do something it’s a long drawn out ordeal before I get left alone and have enough time .

I’ve never seen anything larger than #1 buck loaded in the 20 gauge so I kinda figured that’s a good size to stop at .

With 3/4 to 7/8 ounce being my weight range I wanna see if I can fit that much of #1 , #2 and #3 buck in the CB knockoff of the WAA28 wad and a little buffer .

I loaded some buckshot today for the 28 . The first I did with the shot cup intact and I got no where close to the pellet count I was looking in #1 , 2 or 3 . But after trying them with the petals removed they worked a lot better . Used SR7625 , SR4756 , Blue Dot , Herco , Universal Clays and W572 . I’ll elaborate more later .

Well let’s see I removed the petals from the Claybuster WAA28 HS wads and use Remington STS hulls . In all loads with petals removed I loaded 15 of the #3 or 12 of the #2 or 8 of the #1 buck . I also loaded two of each with each of the following powders SR7625-14 grains , Blue Dot 18.5 grains , SR4756 16 grains , Herco 14 grains , Universal Clays 14.5 grains and finally W572 16 grains . These will most likely be patterned in my front yard . Oh yeah I didn’t add any buffer with these , after trying in the little Parker if any look good I may try again with a touch of buffer added . Got verification from the mold maker that my slug mold is on the way from Russia . Hopefully it’ll be here by thanksgiving

I've got 20 ga loads in #4 buck I don't know why they would be that hard to find. Maybe it's a deep south thing.

I also remember buying 2 boxes of the 28 ga Berneke slugs when I bought my NEF just to try them out. They seem to shoot very well. A very small 3 shot group.
Good luck

I’ve never seen factory loaded 28 buckshot . And the only 20 I’ve ever seen was #1 (euro) #2 or #3 . As to the Brenneke slugs according to the sales guy the yearly ration of Brenneke 28 slugs is not a huge amount and yes it’s a niche market but when I started looking all our distributors were out or closed up ! According to the sales guy the yearly shipment just arrived at their wharehouse .

Parker’s first 28’s were made in 1899/1900 . All on the 0 frame like the one I have coming . A few years later they brought out the 00 frame 28’s . I hope eventually to have an 00 as well .

Me too! That's the shuttlecock type? It get too fuzzy when I zoom in on it . I might have to get one of those if you have good results- although both of my 28s are choke tube guns, not real fond of tubes and slugs.

Me too! That's the shuttlecock type? It get too fuzzy when I zoom in on it . I might have to get one of those if you have good results- although both of my 28s are choke tube guns, not real fond of tubes and slugs.
You mean screw in chokes or full length Briley or Kolar insert tubes ? If they’re screw ins wouldn’t bother me but full length skeet tubes I wouldn’t try .

Choke tubes 6pt not sub gauge tubes. My Red Label I wouldnt be too concerned about but my Rizzini has thin barrels. Yes I know they would be ok but ...
Of course then I'd want rifled tubes for the Red Label !

I don’t put a lot of stock in rifled screw ins . But I just shoot at 25 yards and don’t use them
Much over that although I’ve got one Parker GH 16 that had an inch removed at the muzzle and it shoots better at 50 yards then most do at 25 .

I’ve only got one mold each for the 16 , 20 and 28 . But when it comes to the 10 and a lesser degree the 12 I have a bunch of slug mold options several thanks to “Bikerbeans” getting out of the larger bore stuff . I use several molds in the 10 that were made for rifled 12’s and of course the Moose Molds I have were made for ML minnie balls but can be adapted . There is somewhat of a method to my madness but most sane people could really care less . Or say if you have one mold that works in such and such an application why do you need all the others .

My Benelli does quite well with a rifled tube with the old Remington Buckhammer. But I don't use it anymore for slugs since I got the Savage 220.
