My first !

Post by 6pt-sika »

My first ever with a crossbow ! At 07:10 this morning 18 lasered yards from an elevation of 26 feet . Ravin R9 and Muzzy Trocar 100 grain . He’s not much to look at , but I decided I’d shoot what I saw . My hunting time especially at first light is going to be slim this year . The second photo shows the entrance wound and the bolt exited thru the offside shoulder blade . The last picture you can see the shoulder bone was not kind to the Trocar blades !!

Bow hunting makes you feel more like a 'real' Hunter according to my son. I've never killed anything with an arrow except a few tree limbs... :D

Crossbows aren't allowed during archery season here in Oregon. You have to use them during regular rifle season, so most people don't use them at all.

I didn't look very closely. I thought it was a doe. Still, the young ones are the best eating, and that one should be tender and tasty.

Yes they do and I’d preferred a small doe ! That one’s a button however :?

I’ve killed several with a vertical compound bow . Matter of fact the first deer I ever punched with a bow was a kinda small Sika Hind I shot over on the Eastern Shote on MD back around 1998 or so . And killed a handful of white tails after that . I’d actually rather use a vertical bow but my shoulder objects .

Congrats man.
I love bow hunting, makes you more likely of success during rifle season too. All that time in the woods and not shooting at just any distance makes for lots of deer "happenings" that make you a better hunter. I remember years ago reading that whitetails don't make any noise. What a load of stuff. Their language is everything from the tiniest bleat to the loudest snort and much, much body language. And species! Where I'm located ours are the almost tiny Texas variety but by the time you get to the north end of our county the species has changed to Odoquilius Virginianus Kansas that can be huge. Of course some of those adventurous old Kansas bucks wander down to our territory on occasion. You've got to be patient if you want to kill a big one.

Excellent stuff. I had a crossbow a few years ago and it was scary accurate. Hunting with one is illegal here ( ) but errr, it worked just fine.

I got a crossbow a few years back when my right hand stopped working as it should. When I finally got my hand squared away last year I gave it to a friends grandson and got the compound out of the closet. Then my shoulder started acting up so I gave it to a guy from work. Getting old sucks.

I bought that crossbow used although it didn’t look like it . Anyway it came with a bunch of stuff including a bunch of Rage Hypodermic 100 grain broadheads . I’ve always used Muzzy’s in vertical bows so I bought the Muzzy Trocar’s and as you can see they do very well . Interestingly the field points , Muzzy’s and Rage all shot the same POI at 20 , 30 and 50 yards . So I’m thinking the next time I go I might swap out the broadheads and give the Rage broadheads a chance .
