Watch your muzzles!

Post by Nath »

While hunting today I stabbed the barrels in the earth!
I was rushing to retrieve a bird and only just noticed what I did!
Fortunately the gun was empty and I was done for the day.
Check the muzzles out.

clay pigeon, stool pigeon……… clay pigeon, stool pigeon :o

I once did the same thing while hunting with a 12ga slug gun, slipping/falling onto my side into a nice deep puddle of water/mud in December one year...

(I won't tell you what I did to dry out in the middle of some LARGE woods..... ;) )

I'm glad you caught the faux pas, Nath.

Nothing a stick could not fix friend

Thanks everyone.

Easily done! A deer hunter I knew had a bolt stuck in his face when his 6.5 swede blew up in his face. Was unconscious for an hour plus. Woke up covered in blood.
He is fine now and still hunts. Does not know to this day what caused it but thinks it may of been a barrel obstruction!

That's why if I had my druthers I'd fit up almost every gun I have with a threaded muzzle. It would give the option of putting on a suppressor to make the report less abrasive, but also the option of putting on a small 'birdcage' flash suppressor, which really helps protect against muzzle-dip. ALL "kids rifles" should have an AR-15 type flash suppressor muzzle for that reason - they are shorter, thus nearer the ground, plus less careful about such things.

I'd have a hard time threading 'heirloom' or other antique or 'classic' guns, but any practical hunting gun deserves a threaded muzzle to allow such options.

Thanks for posting that, Nath, a very good lesson for all of us .

I had a similar experience some years ago, was up elk hunting and managed to slip and fall, driving the muzzle of my rifle into some mud. That ended it for me for the day, had to hike back to the truck and go back to camp. From that day forward, I have carried an aluminum jointed rod and some patches in my backpack. Never have used them, but you never know...... :)

Back in the 1970's. My friend and I were rabbit hunting. Both of us were high school age and fairly responsible and experienced with shooting and hunting. My friend stubbed his boot and fell forward, muzzle low and left, into damp earth. His finger must has been on the trigger. There was a muffled thump and dirt falling about us. Helping my buddy to his feet, I noticed the banana peeled muzzle of his H&R Topper. It looked like it was from a cartoon! We both counted our blessings and learned a life lesson. Finger off the trigger until ready to fire!
Later the single shot shotgun was trimmed back to 19 inches, new bead, and back in service. Even better for rabbits! We even tried deer slugs. OMG! Lightweight, short, and dangerous on both ends! HaHa. MK

I like the Doc's idea about threaded muzzles. A flash reducer would help in protecting the muzzle.

Yepper. It worked, too. Very few of the M16s caught a social disease.

On rifles I keep black electricians tape over the muzzle at all times. It has saved me from having to go home early on many occasions.
Many ask if it affects accuracy. No way. The air trapped between the muzzle and the projectile compresses and blows the tape off before the bullet ever gets there.
A shotgun would he harder to cover, especially if you are shooting often.
They make muzzle condoms but they are thin, tear easy, are expensive and just look gross.

Actually the tape is not popped off before the bullet gets there, it's muzzle blast that propels the tape.
Every piece of tape I have recovered has a bullet hole through it.
If it was the case that compressed air could move the tape in time, would it not also move some earth or snow.

I keep a roll of Gaffers tape in my waterfowling kit, hunting kit, and muzzle loading kit for among other things sealing muzzles. Gives me a little peace of mind and a margin for error.

My buddy uses Saran wrap and the little twist ties from bread because his father taught him to and he believes the old wives talk that tape causes the first shot to fly wide.

I've tested the theory extensively and I can not discern a change in point of impact for first shot using tape.

The tape does not "pop off". It stays firmly attached to the barrel with a nice, round high-pressure perforation through it.

(Volume X pressure) / T = (Volume X Pressure)/T

As you fire the gun, the temperature rapidly rises (leakage) and increases the pressure. The volume is also decreasing (rapidly down to zero) and that increases pressure. That tape has a hole in it before the projectile ever gets there and has absolutely no effect on accuracy. Hundreds and hundreds of deer, coyotes, pigs and a couple dozen African plains game can attest.

When I get home I'll plug in the number and you'll see how how the pressure gets without even considering the temperature increase.
