Cool Pitchy!! I have My Grandmas Emerson , I think its 18 or 24". it's three speed and oscillates if wanted. still runs great. On hot summer nights sleeping upstairs about 1960 I was sure that the aliens from "War of The Worlds" were sure to find the noise that sucker made. but even then I had a toy levergun to protect Me. . .

Those old fans were great! They moved a lot of air and they were quiet. Not like the junk they turn out today.

Now THAT'S cool beans. Really like the one with brass blades. Did it come as a 2 blade or did something happen to one of 4 and the other had to be trimmed? I ask because we had to do just that to one of our ceiling fans.

Those kinds of fans were everywhere when I was just a wee lad, especially the oscillating varieties......

Surprisingly, injuries to pets and children were quite rare......

But the colors were always an ugly green.....varying from as light as the inside of a cucumber, through avocado onto olive drab military surplus.....

Then, in the cities, there were the ubiquitous unvented natural gas space heaters with no safety pilots......all featured both lead paint and asbestos in their construction.....How did we survive ?

My folks had one of the old metal blade fans. It lasted forever. I remember them using it in the summer time. My brothers and I knew to keep our fingers out of it. I think Mom slapped our hands to teach us.

Neat.
When I was a kid, my dad made one from a car fan. It had a metal lumber frame and ran on a 120v electric motor. No guards or screens of any kind.
It was like trying to sleep in a B17. :D
Put out air enough to blow the sheets off the bed. :D

Neat!
I have a fan that was my grandparents. It has an adjustable height, probably 18" fan, 3 speeds and that ugly green paint, it sure does move air and on high the house shakes! It has an oil port for the motor. I believe it's either a GE or Westinghouse.

Thanks fellers, the one on the left with the gold blades should have four someone must of modified it at one time.
We got the big one painted i`ll post a picture later.
They had hot air fans before electric, they were sharp looking and used a lantern under it for the heat supply, they were called a lake breeze.
I have a Edison electric motor withe a adjustable governor that came out of a cylinder player i might try and make into a fan today.

Thought more would say more about the home made fan we built, they had weird ornate fans like that, hard to find them and they want a couple grand for that type. :)

Did you make the base for that one with the sewing machine motor? Nice looking job. Is that an O'ring drive?

Hi Ron, the wood base and the scroll metal was for something else that Norma picked up.
There`s a waxed string that goes from the sewing machine motor to the fan shaft. :)

I used to buy them whenever I saw them for sale...no more......on the plus side, they will move a lot of air.....on the negative side they will burn your house down when the motor goes or something catches in the blades...I've had four of these big Hunter fans and two of them started smoking after extended use. I now have what's left in the junk pile to take to the scrapyard.

I still have a little G.E. that we use on the outside table.----6

Thanks Jay, they were called a pancake fan in the old days and are some of the spendy ones now.
The original ones had short blades on them and were table models, i may get another one and make one like that.

Yes...the BAR man has a right to be cool tool...two kinds of cool. He's cool and needs to be kept cool. I was thinking about sending him back to the manufacturer for a tune up. :D

Ceiling fans most always need to be balanced, especially the cheapy $100 ones we buy. Each blade needs to come off and weighed to the quarter to half ounce. Usually some heavy duct tape with some washers to the upper side will add enough weight to balance them.---6

I see those ceiling fans in yard/garage sales for a couple of bucks all the time but we have plenty of them on our ceilings so I pass them up. I've got a smallish squirrel cage and a 5 wheel base for it that I need to put together for my shop. Anyway, fine job bro. I like it, especially the cut down version.
