Day one, deer one

Post by wvfarrier »

First day of archery season yesterday. I took this 6pt (wouldve been an 8 he broke 2 tines fighting). I spotted him from my tree saddle, he was 60 yards away and bedded down, it was pouring rain. I waited for a bit but he was not moving so i climbed down and stalked toward him. Managed to get within 8 yards, took my shot and he only went 12 more before collapsing. The bow is an Obsession FXL, 30" Black Eagle Carnivore shaft with 150 grain insert and 100 grain Rocky Mountain Switchblade broadhead. The broadhead was still shaving sharp afterward.

Those arrows are so wicked; I think I'd rather get hit with a bullet in terms of potential to survive...!

Great job stalking so close. That takes patience and skill...!

I agree. I hunted with a veterinarian last year and he said a well placed arrow and modern broadpoint was almost 100% fatal. A similar hit with a 30 caliber would be survivable IF you got immediate medical attention.

I can't believe the advances made in bow and arrow technology and performance in the last dozen or so years. My bow and arrow set up was reasonably state of the art in 2000 …… now it would be a step below a serious set up for a newbie.

Self bows and stone points, he says. WOW! Hat is off! 8)
Agree the modern tackle is unbelievably shootable and effective. Congratulations on stalking to 8 yards. I see guys boasting about 90-yard shots on some archery forums.

Stalking close is impressive to me. The modern broadheads are deadly, but only if they hit the deer. A close miss from 60 yards is a waste of a shot in my opinion. A solid hit at 8 yards put meat in the freezer for you. That 8 yard shot shows skill.
