Winchester Model 70 gift today

Post by Mossyoak1957 »

Went to visit my 90 year old Uncle this morning and he gave me his 1953 Winchester Model 70 30-06!

It's a 1953 so that would line up with the dates he was overseas,he told me he bought it while he was in the Air force during the Korean War when he was in Germany he bought it new.

The scope Weaver KV 2 3/4x and 5x is perfectly clear with fine cross hairs, the mount is a Pachmayer LO-SWING Scope mount,it works great.

I'm sure that mount destroyed the value a ton but I ain't sellin it anyway but would still like opinions on the value.

I know that gun has killed a zillion deer I remember him hunting with it 50 some years ago.

I'll never change a thing on it.

I'm going to sight this baby in and hunt with it!

That's one sweet rifle!

I've wanted a pre-'64 Model 70 forever. My dad has my Grandfather's .250-3000 but he ain't giving it up anytime soon. I've always wanted one in .30-'06 as it's one of my favorite calibers and have tons of reloading components for it.

Looking forward to a range report! Gotta be a tack driver!!

Very nice vintage Winchester Model 70.
A gem for sure. Congratulations, a finely crafted rifle with family history.

It is a beauty with some character showing. I hope it shoots as well as it looks like it should.

Very nice looking Winchester, yes take it out hunting & then tell your uncle all about the hunt
from my experience with my uncle that gifted me a fine 88, he told me to go out hunting with it & report
back with the results, so that year I shot an antelope & a white tail buck, the photos & the story was very welcomed

You're lucky! When my Dad died back in '08 my oldest HALF brother got first dibs on a 1941 M70 in 30 GOVT '06 that my Grandfather bought just before December 7th, he later decided that he didn't want it and offered it to me....for $800 bucks! I wanted it so bad I gave him what he wanted.

Nice rifle, BTW. Mine is much like yours, but with Lyman receiver peep sight and dove tail blank on the rear barrel sight. He also had a rubber butt pad and no sling swivels, I guess he used it quite a bit in the woods around Dunsmuir, ca. Just wish he got the scope mount it was set up for (top front receiver and left side rear receiver that was also used for peep sights).

As to the value:

1) It's worth more than you paid for it.

2) The provenance makes it priceless....

I was gifted a model 70, 308 but alas it's a post gun. Shoots well enough although I haven't worked up a load for it yet.

Nice! I have one pre 64 Model 70 and it was in 06. Rifle looked and shot great, I just never could get a deer with it. Hunted with it a bunch for several years but never saw anything legal to shoot while carrying it.
