Hillbilly music.

Post by Pitchy »

There`s been a special on PBS of late about country music including Hillbilly music.
I n part one there`s a guy holding a rectangular wood box and he called it a hillbilly river boat whistle.
I`ve searched everywhere and can`t find one, i`d like to make one has anyone ever heard of such a thing.

Drawing a blank, Lenn, but don't get PBS. I made a Tennessee Music Box once, a primitive version of the dulcimer.

I think this is the basic plan, Pitchy. His was larger, which would give the deeper tone.

By the way, anyone who has PBS is missing a treat if they don't enjoy the Country Music series. Ken Burns does an outstanding job as a documentarian. It'll be on for a week.

It was a riverboat whistle that the "Solemn Old Judge" would blow when he felt like it. I remember it well from listening to the Grand Ol Opry on the radio. I can't imagine how he could make enough wind to blow that steam whistle.

If you look a little deeper, you find a gigantic taproot of Country Music in Ireland. Western Music had different influences.

It's been a good show so far. A lot of interviews with some of those who have passed on. He covers the history very well.

Lenn, It just occurred to me that of all the things you've built have you ever built any musical instruments? My wife went to college in Berea, Ky where there is a dulcimer maker. You might want to consider something like that for a project. The most amazing thing is that the different kinds of woods produce such different kinds of sounds. God Bless.

Radio is the only musical instrument I can play. And in Winter I can tell just 2 notes, and shose only when walking on ice. C sharp and B flat.

I just watched another episode of Ken Burns documentary. He missed the chance to mention a Texan who changed the sound of Country from a high pitched nasal twang to a smooth sound. In less than 4 years from his recording contract to his death in an airplane, Jim Reeves changed Country music forever. Incidentally, Martin Robinson of White Sport Coat and El Paso fame was the only witness.

Cash wasn't the only one. I don't know why so many singers turn to drugs. Too bad, but drugs have taken a lot of talent away.

I don`t think people realize the toll being on the road so much and the business dealings it puts on a person.
