Found me an old Ruger Blackhawk

Will be picking this up in a week (can't wait!)

Ruger Blackhawk 3 screw .357 Mag Flattop 4 5/8 inch barrel..... bore is spotless.....not sent back for the transfer bar.

Made the year I was born 1957 I wasn't looking for that year but it's a plus!

Been doing some research on it,it's the type 2 Blackhawk the only thing that's not original are the grips they had the black rubber grips on them in 57 I actually like the wooden grips better anyway. The type 1 from 55 to 56 had a serrated front sight ramp and a serrated ejector rod button and the rear sight said Micro on it Ruger changed that mid 1956

Always wanted a 3 screw with a 4 5/8 barrel but could never afford to pay the prices they were asking this was in my price range I feel I did good for the condition it's in,if I didn't do good I really don't care I wanted it.....

The books may say the 1957 BH has checkered plastic grips -- but mine's wood, too...

The walnut grip panels on your Flat Top appear to be original...…Nice find ! .


FYI, it's been documented that:

* XR-3 black rubber grip panels were standard issue from 1953-1960.

* Also starting in 1953, at additional cost, "genuine" American Walnut, Stag (1953-61 ), or Ivory (1954-57) grip panels could be ordered from Ruger.

(Ruger never offered Mother-of-Pearl grip panels)

* Starting in 1960, Ruger started shipping SOME (not all) guns with the walnut grip panels - these were the RSS5W, RSSMW, etc .

* The price for the optional walnut grip panels was an additional $5 until they became standard.

(guns with black rubber grip panels were sold for $1 less at that time)

* The stag grip panels were an additional $8.50/pair.

* The Ivory grip panels were an additional $16.50.

*The early (pre-1959) walnut grip panels can be identified by a special contour that matches the grip frame, above the medallions.

*After 1959, the walnut panels were not contoured above the medallions, and were much thicker in the medallion area.

It's possible that someone robbed the grip frame off of the gun and switched it to an old model and put the grip frame of the old model, along with the grips on the flattop. Grips (stocks) are not interchangeable between the flattop XR3 frame or the XR3 RED frame. Some guys preferred the XR3 style as it's similar to a single action Colt. The stocks that are showing are from an old model...Black Eagles.

It's unlikely that it happened but if you get curious, it's easy to find out just by trying the grips on an old model or new model but not the SB. Either way, it's still a nice piece and one to keep for the long haul.
