.444 Marlin

Post by Ray »

Remlin recently made a limited run of .444 rifles and they are at the distributors for just under $700 with free shipping.

The scant, early reviews have been mostly positive. Time will tell as more of them are sold.

Best online prices for the hornady 265 gr. fp superformance run about $1.41 a bang with the gummy points of the same weight about five cents higher.

Of the thirty plus 444’s I’ve owned I still have four . Marlin circa 66 , 67 and 2001 as well as a rechamberd Ruger #3 that started as a 44 MAG . So while the new ones may be just fine I won’t need any . And for those that see fit to buy I hope they do well for the buyers .

Sometime I'd like a 'range report' on your Ruger #3. I have a No.1 in 7mm Rem Mag, and I don't think that's the gun/chambering combination for me. If I'm shooting 7mm Rem Mag, I want something with 1/2 MOA or better accuracy, and I don't think the No.1's are capable of that. I thought about rebarreling it to 45-70, but I have a Marlin Guide gun and Encore rifle in that chambering, and my 500 S&W levergun for even more thump. So I plan to either sell the No.1 in 7mm Rem Mag, or rebarrel it. I thought about 444 Marlin. It seems to me that the No.1 is best suited for a big-bore thumper, something from 416 Rigby down to 444 Marlin, and I'm still pondering.....

I shot the smallest three shot group at 100 yards I’ve ever fired with a Ruger #1B that was rebarreled with a Lilja Mag weight barrel in 22-250 AI the group measured .054” after deducting the bullet diameter . I “had” a factory and untouched Ruger #1B in 264 Win Mag that was the most accurate 264 I’ve ever owned out of it two 700’s and a Pre 64 Model 70 . That number 1 was less then 1/2 MOA . My 375 H&H as well as 416 REM Mag are both sub 3/4 MOA .

I have a 1B as well, 218 Bee. Absolutely love it! However when I got it the accuracy wasn't stellar. The fix was to relieve the forend where it contacts the receiver, then a leather shim between the barrel and forend tip. Instant .25-.375 groups if I do my part.

Fascinating....

Maybe I need to fiddle with some handloads and give the No.1 a workout.

Of course that kills my excuse to rebarrel it.... :?

I've always heard that No.1's needed a bit of help but were then usually very accurate. I've got a Canjar single-set trigger for the No.1 lying around in a drawer here somewhere. Never could decide on a chambering so I am still without one.

My 22-250 AI has a Canjar in it , I wish they still made them .

Funny, I was thinking it belonged on a No.1 in 220 Swift ... which is probably about neck and neck with a 22-250 AI.

Had a Canjar on a #1 Tropical in 375 H&H that,I had. Sweet trigger. Wish I had one for my 25.06 #1 Varmint.

I've owned I think no less then THREE #1V's in 220 Swift . Matter of fact if I'm not mistaken the first #1 I ever bought was a very slightly used 1V in 220 Swift with a Leupold Vari XIII 6.5-20x40AO on top . Think I still have the scope . seems to me that one shot less then MOA with factory Hornady ammo and an unmessed with factory trigger .

Yeah, I knew the trigger would be hard to find so I bought one many years ago thinking that I'd get a No.1 someday. I have a Canjar for a 581/2 I've adapted one to a Rem 591. Might be the same trigger for the 788. I think the install instructions are marked that way anyhow.
