shooting hogs with 38 special bullets

Post by mickbr »

looking to try out some 125-135gn gold dots and golden sabre HP at about 1050fps in a 357 lever. Anyone tried these combos? Seeing whether they kill faster than subsonic cast. They expand to 55-60cal and penetrate 14-16" gel according to the youtube kids. Backup shots will be 158gn RNFP hardcast as normal. Might be a very short experiment, worst case the dogs can find any that run too far :D

I've only ever used 158gr jacketed at about 1800fps out of a .357 for hogs. (They work)

I'll be interested to hear how a lighter slower bullet performs.

I am not a very successful sus scrofa hunter and have never played one on the telly but I found this.....a .38 here should do the trick.

Shot placement rules!
I shoot .357 revolver and rifle and either is sufficient for hogs within range of the cartridge and your ability.

I do suggest the use of JSP and not hollow point bullets.

I have used both on hogs and the JSP are more reliable.

Id agree CRS, except running subsonics I don't think any JSP will expand this low.

I'd suggest that's where shot placement becomes the deciding factor.

The placement indicated by the diagram that Ray posted above is ideal.

Yup, I'd like to see if the combo can work for any bodyshots too. Doubts about punching through the shield on big hogs, as a decent hardcast can.

We have used 158 grain soft point with great success. Shot placement as suggested is the sweet spot, closer the better.

Soft points at 357 power or carbine power are no problem yes.

Might I suggest full power loads as the follow up in the gun just for a bit more punch.
I've only shot 1 hog, Ruger carbine , 300 gr XTP behind the shoulder, the boar didnt flinch at the shot. It walked about 20 yds and fell over. The XTP did expand to about .750 but went clean through. I had Barnes solids as follow up in the mag. No I didnt need them.
One of my buddies tried HOT 45 ACP fmj from his 1911, we spent quite a bit of time tracking that hog, the bullet stopped well before it got to the ribs. It was finally taken at distance by a 308.

This:
Molde Lyman 358429.jpg
Plus 10.0 grains of Blue Dot placed here:

works very well in my experience. Rifle is a Rossi 92 in .38SPL loaded warm at 1400 fps, give or take.
