This new .410 addiction

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Geez, Nath, did you know what a snowball you pushed down the hill?
I got to thinking about how little I shoot and hunt with a shotgun anymore, and somehow with all this .410 talk here lately, it struck me that -- like fishing with a 3-weight flyrod -- less is more with the .410 bore.
So I sold the 28-gauge O/U, located a Yildiz .410 side-by-side at an Academy Sports store in Lubbock, Texas, and went and got it yesterday. Academy is the sole U.S. importer of Yildiz, which has a very good reputation for quality and value, but some firearms they will not ship within their store system for some reason, including the little SXS. So the El Paso Academy was out and my only option was to travel. It was 10 hours of driving, total -- but worth it, I believe.
This gun comes with 26-inch barrels, screw-in chokes, 3-inch chambers, single selective trigger, extractors (who needs ejectors with a .410?), very nice fit and Turkish walnut wood. Mine weighs an ounce or two over 5 pounds yet has lovely balance. All I can say is the quail in these parts had better have life insurance come November. 8)

Rusty, I will pattern it, by golly. Will report.

Bikerbeans, I now live in the northern Chihuahuan desert of south-centeral New Mexico. Lots of desert quail, if you don't mind stepping over the snakes to get to 'em.

Bill great find! You are going to love traipsing around while carrying it. Plus you have all the gun you need for snattlerakes or quail!
Remember to pattern ALL the choke tubes- bet you'll find more open chokes will work better.

BTW- GREAT WOOD!!

Great ... now I have to swing by Academy on my way home. What do I tell my wife ... that it's traditional here to give a pre-4th of July gift?

Bill,

That is very pretty! I've always wanted a .410 double.

Here are my two favorite .410s
Image
The Enfield is a re-worked British .410 single shot, Cyl Bore.
The other was my Mom's Mossberg 500 .410 w/ a full choke. She was deadly around the farm with her .410! Miss that lady dearly!!

Thanks Nath, you old enabler, you -- and a hair under £380.
Jason, I had one of those Enfields converted to .410 back when they were plentiful and affordable -- and loaded .444 Marlin cases for it. Worked OK. 8)

I struck out. My Academy had a 410 single shot only. This one must be hard to find. The noobs behind the counter were no help.

I had a jungle carbine in 410 as a kid.
I use to pull the shot and stuff a solid slug I cast screwed to a wad back in the case!
Nothing was safe to 80 yds including the nut firing it!

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Rimfire, you have to keep changing "your store" on the Academy Web site while looking for this shotgun to see if it is in stock. The stores I checked were either out or showed "limited stock," which I called to confirm.

Yeah, I figured that out eventually. And I have discovered that no store in the state of FL has one.
