What a difference a typo makes....
I used to explain genetic single-nucleotide substitutions by illustrating them as 'typos' where like substituting one of 26 letters for another may (or may not) cause a difference in meaning, such as misspelling 'something' as 'sometheng' would be inconsequential, whereas describing one's behavior at the Christmas office party as 'mild' would be definitely different than if mis-typed 'wild'.
Now I have a better one....
Like many family physicians these days, I don't do hospital/inpatient medicine, but I do keep tabs on those patients so I can resume/continue their care once they are released. So today get a message today from the son of a woman with a terminal illness that is rapidly progressing, and she likely won't make it out of the hospital. The office staff wrote "Son called, his mother's condition is deteriorating, and she probably won't make it out of the hospital; would like to see family doc one more time. . . . [ man, this is touching ]. . . . and the hospital says they won't allow this - what can he do....???"
What...???? How dare they shut me out of the hospital like that....!!! I know that most inpatient care is now provided by dedicated hospitalists, along with whatever disease-specific specialists are appropriate, but I provide the other, albeit less critical, 95% of their lifetime care, and should be a respected member of the health-care team. I go from flattered, to sad, to mad....
Then I see the smudge on the paper......the REAL message is "Son called, his mother's condition is deteriorating, and she probably won't make it out of the hospital; would like to see family dog one more time, and the hospital says they won't allow this - what can he do....???"
Now I go from feeling flattered, to sad, to mad. . . to feeling stupid....

Doc....OK, you've been mixed up with a dog....but that's alright as your bark is not as bad as your bite.
.........depends on the size of the dog. Back in '96 my wife was in the hospital for a more-than-a-3-day stay.......she wanted to see Spidey, one of our Yorkies........NO problem says me...I don't even bother to ask the staff.....I go home, get a carry bag....put the dog in there and carry Spidey through the hospital, up the elevator and into her room. My wife was elated. Nurse comes in with the dog on the bed, and says,"what a neat little dog, I won't say a word".---6

Sometimes it is better to ask forgiveness then permission.

We have all missed the main point from a typo or illegible handwriting. It happens. I hope the patient somehow got to see her dog one more time.

There are many days I would likely be mistaken for a scruffy dog....!

Re: What a difference a typo makes....
Like the difference created by the use of an apostrophe.
For example;
The acceptable "Let's eat, Grandma" vs the cannibalistic "Let's eat Grandma"
Wm.

Re: What a difference a typo makes....
Your use of the apostrophe is correct in both cases, but the comma certainly makes a difference.
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.
