My first choice but hard to come by these days.......
Speer hot core in 130, 150, or 170 gr. will do.

Re: Best 30-30 bullet to reload for hogs
I would feel perfectly comfortable with any 170 gr. softpoint from Remington, Hornady, Speer or Sierra -- basically, whatever I could find locally. At .30-30 velocities, the standard cup-and-core style bullet not only works, but gives just about the best performance you could hope for.

anything hard cast. 30-30s don't deserve copper fouling

My last feral hog was dropped with a 100gr. cup and core by Sierra in my new .250-30000, never saw the need of a more expensive slug. My deer bullet for my .30-30 AI is the Speer 150gr RN.

Thanks for the link.....Anyone else notice the photo on midway does not at all resemble the scalloped nose of core lokts of yesteryear ?

Any 150 grain was my choice when I owned one, including the original silvertips.

+1
Works good in 30-40 Krag, 303 Savage, 300 Savage, 7.5X55 Swiss, reduced load 308, 30-06 as well. Just a good, inexpensive bullet to have around in bulk in my experience. I miss the days when I could buy the 'blemished' ones a thousand at a time from Midway for $40 something dollars.

Re: Best 30-30 bullet to reload for hogs
I have heard stories of hogs big enough and tough enough that a 30-30 doesn't penetrate the hide and gristle at the shoulder. Has anyone actually seen a hog big enough for that to be real???
All I have ever seen is that a good 170 grain bullet works just fine. No need for anything expensive in my experience. Core-lokt, Sierra Pro Hunter, Speer, or any available 170 grain bullet should do perfectly well. Hornady is available at Academy Sports in Waxahachie. That is about 15 minutes away from me. Hornady bullets are accurate and they stay together at typical 30-30 velocities. I have not used an AI in any of my guns. Mostly because I have other calibers to use when I reach the safe limit on whatever I am using. I know that AI gives a little more velocity without going over the pressure limit. Me, I don't need it. If you want or need it, go ahead and I hope it is exactly what you want and need.
I would be cautious of anything made in Russia or Yugoslavia until I could test it on something like milk jugs full of water or Jell-O to see if they hold together. Yes, Jell-O is much softer than ordinance grade gelatin, but it is cheap and biodegradeable. It works. Not perfect, but it works.

170 gr Sierra Pro Hunter is quite effective, indeed!
