Always a good day when my uncle stops by!

Post by 2ndovc »

My dad's older brother has been planning on selling his place on Lake Erie for a couple years and moving south to be with all my cousins year round. They put out the real estate sign yesterday. He's been giving me all his old ammo and whatever reloading components and equipment he still had lying around. Along with a big box of BP stuff he and my dad unloaded this old canon in my garage this morning. The barrel is about 20" long with a 1" bore and it weighs a ton! Can't wait to set it off!

I know the neighbors are going to love it!! :D

Cool to set that off. What kind of treasures have you found in the reloading supplies, bet you have alot of fond memories when you go through it..
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Lots of good stuff. Most of the stuff belonged to my grandfather and he was really into .38 Specials, .45ACP, 250 Savage, 257 Roberts and .30-06. Lots of brass and bullets. Thousands of cast bullets, mostly .257, .38 and .30 cal. Several moulds for .257s and .30 cal. Several sinker moulds for fishing, growing up on the lake they were out there all summer long.

He's given me a lot of good stuff over the years including a five screw Model 29 that's sill in the mahogany case! And that was just for stopping by his place w/ my truck and hauling away a refrigerator! I have another cousin that's also into guns but he's a jerk and nobody really likes him much, so I get the good stuff. :D

There are items you can mix into the gunpowder to get colors when you set it off. Internet searches will tell you what color is given by what material. I think Epsom Salts give a green color. I don't know how much to use or even what else is safe. A little research and some cautious experimentation could lead to a fun and colorful time.

After my 2 3/4" blued Service Six sold i was bummed, but got a Bearcat for a decent price. Then i won a Stainless 2 3/4" .38 Special Service Six. The Bearcat sold for good profit and last weekend i got an 50's era 257420 SC mold. So the world righted itself again in my corner. As much as I'd like another .250 or .257 I'm gonna build a 25-45 Sharps to use up my .25 cal bullets. Todd/3leg

Cool, an extended member of the family has a small cannon with I think a 1 1/4 " bore. they were shooting it across a huge soybean field and it was something to see the dust come up from the round skipping across the ground way down the field.

My dad has one too, a bit bigger and a D cell battery fits the bore perfectly. We used to take them down to my uncles beach and shoot all kinds of stuff out into the lake. Somebody would probably call the SWAT team these days, but we had a lot of fun with those things. Especially when he and my dad had a few Scotch and waters! :D
