Bullet mold

Post by Gobblerforge »

I recently picked up an 1894 in 38-55, a legal Ohio caliber. It is a standard sporting rifle with a round barrel. I already picked up a tang peep for hunting that I will put on soon. I wanted to load for it but it seams that the lyman Company has stopped making the mold #375248 for this round. What would my options be?

This might work unless you need a gas-check.....

Thanks Tycer, I got it. I looked but didn't see that one. But I still wonder, why would they stop producing a mold?

Gobbler, do take the time to make a Cerrosafe chamber cast. A lot of these older .38-55s have chamber/throat issues that might keep you from chambering a round loaded with a cast boolit that is a proper fit for your throat. If you need some Cerrosafe, I have a bar I'd be happy to send.

I like the RCBS 37-250-FN; it is a gas checked bullet that shoots very well in my Winchester Legacy rifle.

You are talking a little above my head. What specifically would I be looking for? I have fired some 20 factory rounds so far with no issues.

That’s a good mold originally conceived by Ranch Dog with tumble lube grooves . I never tried it in a 38-55 but I did in a couple 375 WIN rifles . His initial try at a bullet for the 375 / 38-55 was a 379-210GC of which I also tried on paper and deer . Both did nicely in a pair of Marlin 375’s .

I used to have a Lyman 375248 and to be honest never cared for it . I did however have four others that suited me in the 375 WIN and two in the 38-55 . Ranch Dog made a 379-210GC and a 379-235GC both those were great in the Marlin made 375 WIN’s I had . Also liked the RCBS 37-250GC and the Lyman 375296 in the 375 as well as 38-55 . FWIW I prefer gas check bullets and all four I like are as you would assume gas check molds .

Don't waste you time buying a .375 bullet mould.

You will need a .377 or larger.
Try a Lyman 378364 or 380681
