Denver Find: Colt Lightning Large Frame 40-60-260

Post by Shrapnel »

I went to Denver last weekend and it almost busted me. I had no idea what I was getting into. This could be the finest gun show in America. No black guns or Glocks, just good ol' blued steel and Walnut stocks. This is also a rare configuration in short rifle. I pictured it along side of a medium action 44-40.

I found this large frame Lightning in 40-60-260 along with some other guns there. I left Denver nearly broke, but certainly not a bust...

You are a lucky guy to get such a find. When can we expect a range report? I wish my AWA in 45 were a 44-40. I think it would feed better.

Wish I'd have known you were there! We have tables there every year in the middle of row L by the rear restrooms up front. Had 6 or 7 Ballard rifles on the table for sale. We sold about 4 of them, and I bought a couple guns also.
I looked at that large frame Colt pump and thought it was a very fine gun, and very rare! I don't collect them, but certainly appreciate how neat they are!

We were tables L7 and L8, we couldn't have been too far apart...

I never have been a big fan of pumps in general , but I always liked the large frame Lightning’s and especially in 50-95 .

It's interesting to see the medium and large frames next to each other. They really did stretch that thing out for the large frame. I had only heard of the Large Lightning in 50-95 ... which I assume it the most common one. I guess they may have made it the other '76 cartridges as well. I should go read up on it. I've only looked for the rimfire versions at shows.

We must have been neighbors! We were in the middle of row L on the side facing the entry doors.

Shrapnel,
Congrats on your new find. I hope it shoots great and that you get to shoot some critters with it. If you do, please share the results!

It's a beautiful and interesting rifle. I'm wondering if you have any speculation as to what caused the striations in the finish on the receiver. It is certainly a unique look. Perhaps the receiver was wiped off with something years ago that attacked the finish.

Either way, enjoy!

Striating is a result of the aging of the steel and the forging process to make the action. Most all actions whether Colt, Marlin, Winchester or any other manufacturer, will show those lines with age...
