Digging in the hills today

Post by Pitchy »

We did some metal detecting on the old narrow gauge RR grade today, found 40 spikes and all those bolts were in the same hole.
The odd piece is the pin with the retainer on it laying on the flat iron.

A man can always find a use for a RR spike. Wondering if those bolts are good enough steel to make knife blades on the forge? I'm sure you two had a good time. I'm watching the weather as there tornadoes all around us. Not raining right now so I better run lock my shop before another squall hits. 1.75" already and more to come.

I see some knives and bayonets in your future. How far did you hsve to haul them out?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Good for you and Norma, Lenn. I haven't even switched on my detector since moving to N.M., but hope to one of these days. There's just a wee bit of history in these parts ... 8)

There are some things you don't need a metal detector for...

Glad you and Norma had a great day out in the hills Lenn!
